Softball Pitches Pair of Shutouts over Wayland Baptist for Senior Day Sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU Softball team cerebrated its Senior Day at Allen Field in a big way on Friday afternoon as the Evangels pitched a pair of 1-0, 8-0 shutouts over Wayland Baptist to take 3-of-4 in the series.

At the conclusion of the contests, the Evangels honored their seven graduating seniors: Isabel Ray, Kisbel Vizcaya, Emylee Campbell, Makenzie Thurman, Stormy Haynes, Hallie Wilson and Brooklyn Wilson.

GAME ONE
SCORE

    • Mid-America Christian (20-15, 16-9 SAC)

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian mustered an early threat when Kisbel Vizcaya started off the bottom of the first with an infield single to second and stole second before Hallie Wilson drew a walk to put the first two runners aboard with no outs. However, the threat was quickly thwarted as a popout to short and a 4-3 double play ball abruptly ended the frame for MACU.
  • During her next plate appearance, Hallie Wilson put things in-motion following her leadoff walk as she managed to steal both second and third with only one away. Madisson Chavez then delivered the only run of the game with her RBI single through the left side to make it a 1-0 Evangels lead.
  • Wayland Baptist put together their first real dangerous threat in the top of the fifth when Berkley Bradley led off the inning with a triple to right center and Arianna Zubia drew a walk and stole second to put runners at second and third with no one out. However, MACU starting pitcher Chana Wolfe put together an incredible response as she struck out three-straight batters to end the threat.
  • The Evangels had a chance to add to their lead when Stormy Haynes and Vizcaya notched back-to-back two-out singles as the advance to second on the throw put both runners in scoring position. However, the Pioneers' third baseman Mikenzi Carlo made a great running grab in foul territory on Hallie Wilson's pop-up to end the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, MACU induced a pair of quick outs on a pop out to second and a groundout to short, but the Pioneers started a two-out rally of their own as Brooklyn Araujo dropped a single just barely fair down the right field line before Addy Rich and Bradley drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.
  • With the Pioneers threatening to tie or take the lead, MACU went to its closer in Chloeaunna Madbull-Jim as she got Arianna Zubia to weakly pop out to short to end finish the frame.
  • After Carlo started off the seventh with a line drive single to left to start the seventh, the Pioneers put together a dangerous threat as Carlo was moved to second on a swinging bunt to the pitcher before Amber Poorbaugh got a pop-up single to land perfectly into the middle of no man's land between the pitcher, second and short to put runners at the corners with two away. However, MACU ended it in dramatic fashion when Makenzie Thurman made a strong snare on a liner to third to give the Evangels the 1-0 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU scored its one run on four hits while the Pioneers finished with five base knocks.
  • Chana Wolfe got back into the win column in the circle as she allowed only three hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings of work.
  • After getting just her second win of the season in the circle on Thursday, Chloeaunna Madbull-Jim followed it up with her second save of the year as she tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while allowing only two singles.
  • Madisson Chavez notched the lone RBI of the game as the junior catcher slashed 1-for-3 from the dish.
  • Kisbel Vizcaya recorded half of the Evangels' hits as she finished 2-for-3 to go with a stolen base.
  • Hallie Wilson's bat patience and baserunning ability played perhaps the biggest impact in the result as the senior outfielder went 0-for-1, but drew two walks and stole two bases while scoring the game's only run.
  • The result marked the second time this season that the Evangels won a game by a 1-0 score after the team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a one-run result at Nelson back on Mar. 6.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 8, Wayland Baptist 0 (5 Inn)
    • Mid-America Christian (21-15, 17-9 SAC)
    • Wayland Baptist (18-24, 12-18 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Wayland Baptist's only threat came early when Arianna Zubia led off the top of the first with a single and got moved all the way to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. However, MACU starting pitcher Gia Reynosa left her stranded by getting Addy Rich to lineout to short to end the inning.
  • Mid-America Christian was opportunistic in its half of the first as Kisbel Vizcaya started it off by dropping a bloop single into left and got down to second as a result. In the very next at-bat, Hallie Wilson also took advantage of a defensive miscue as she was able to get a slow chopper to the back hand of the pitcher and legged out a close play at first for an infield single and moved all the way to third on a throwing error by Rich while Vizcaya scored on the miscue.
  • Emylee Campbell brought in the second run in the very next at-bat as Wilson scored on her sacrifice fly to left to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • After Serena Rodriguez started off the second with a single and her pinch-runner Faith Kelley was eventually moved to third on a stolen base and Brooklyn Wilson's rifle liner to third, Stormy Haynes was able to get an infield RBI single of her own as she was able to beat out a perfectly chopped slow roller down the first base line to plate Kelley. Vizcaya brought in Wilson during her at-bat by dropping an RBI single into the left center field gap, setting the score to 4-0.
  • The Evangels once again took advantage of a defensive miscue in the third as Campbell started the frame by reaching on an error by the third baseman. After stealing second and getting moved down to third on Isabel Ray's sharp line drive single through the left side, it looked as though she would score on Makenzie Thurman's squeeze bunt. However, she was forced to return after the bat was dropped in the field of play and the ball contacted the bat to rule the play dead and rule Thurman out.
  • However, the result didn't thwart the senior outfielder from scoring as Isabel Ray eventually stole second and Campbell came home on a wild pitch to make it a five-run lead before Rodriguez punched an RBI single through the right side to plate Ray, making it a 6-0 contest.
  • The Evangels put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth as Kayten Herman drew a pinch-hit one-out walk before Hallie Wilson's single to left and Campbell's walk loaded the bases. Haynes, who re-entered after Herman's walk came across to score MACU's seventh run, but the Evangels were not quite able to put the run-rule into effect as Ray grounded out to third to end the inning.
  • MACU found the deciding eighth run in the bottom of the fifth when Rodriguez reached on a one-out single to left and was moved down to second on Talyn Lerma's groundout to third before Madisson Chavez delivered the game-ending RBI single to right to wrap-up the 8-0 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its eight runs on 11 hits while Wayland Baptist finished the contest with only three hits and committed three errors.
  • After suffering a tough luck loss on Thursday, Gia Reynosa had an outstanding bounce-back performance in the circle as she notched her fifth complete game and her second shutout of the season after allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out a pair over five innings of work.
  • It was a team effort with the bats for MACU as five different Evangels tallied an RBI with seven players tallying the team's 11 hits.
  • Serena Rodriguez was the most effective bat, slashing 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run score.
  • The pair of seniors in Kisbel Vizcaya and Hallie Wilson also each finished 2-for-3 from the dish while Vizcaya tacked on a run and an RBI while Wilson notched a run as well.
  • Overall, six of MACU's seven seniors scored a run in their final game on Senior Day as Brooklyn Wilson, Isabel Ray, Stormy Haynes and Emylee Campbell all reached home plate.
  • For the second-straight year, MACU won the series against Wayland Baptist by taking three out of the four games in each of the last two years.
  • The doubleheader sweep and a split between Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Christian allowed the Evangels to jump the Lady Rams for third in the SAC standings with a 17-9 league mark with 10 games left in the conference slate.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will open a very busy eight-day stretch on Monday as the Evangels will start off the 10-game stretch with a crucial SAC doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan. The twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Allen Field.
