Softball Tames Texas Wesleyan Bats for Pivotal Sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY – With both teams being deadlocked in the Sooner Athletic Conference coming into the contest, the MACU Softball team put together a downright excellent performance in its return to Southeast High School. With the games being moved back to Southeast High due to field conditions at Allen Field, the Evangels once against took both games on the turf with a pair of 6-2, 6-0 victories over Texas Wesleyan.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 6, Texas Wesleyan 2
    • Mid-America Christian (22-15, 18-9 SAC)
    • Texas Wesleyan (20-17, 18-11 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian mustered the first major threat in the bottom of the second when Madisson Chavez hammered a one-out double to the left field wall and Heidi Noisey grounded a single back up the middle to put runners at the corners with two outs. However, it turned out to be the lone time Stormy Haynes would be retired in the contest as the groundout to third kept it to a scoreless game.
  • Texas Wesleyan's only scoring of the entire day came in the top of the fourth. Jaelin Ornelas first got on-base on an infield single to second that Kisbel Vizcaya narrowly missed making a sensational running grab and throw to first on the grounder up the middle. In the following at-bat, Kylie Barnes made it a two-score game when she launched a two-run homer over the center field wall.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Evangels came up with an answer with a two-out rally. With a runner at first, Haynes slapped a single through the left side to put two on for Vizcaya to smoke a screaming line drive grounder that eventually got to the left center field wall, bringing in both speedy baserunners and making it a 2-2 game.
  • MACU starting pitcher Chana Wolfe found herself in a bit of trouble in the top of the fifth when EB Zimmerman hit a double to right center before bobbling Mattee Fry's sac bunt straight to the pitcher as Fry eventually stole second to put both runners in scoring position with no outs. However, Wolfe was able to get out of the jam by inducing a shallow flyball to left before Ashley Darilek hit a line drive out to Hallie Wilson in center to keep it a tie ballgame.
  • The Evangels had a great chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Emylee Campbell hammered a leadoff triple to the right field wall to start off the frame. Unfortunately, MACU came up empty as the ball did not leave the infield during the next three at-bats to keep it a tie ballgame.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Evangels finally found all the breathing room they would need. After Makenzie Thurman was hit by a pitch and Heidi Noisey slapped a single up the middle to put the first two aboard, Stormy Haynes tapped a bunt single up the third base line that Ornelas air mailed trying to get the speedy Haynes out at first, allowing Thurman to score from second and getting Noisey down to third to put runners at the corners.
  • With MACU holding a 3-2 lead, it was initially looking like that was going to be the only run MACU was going to score. While Haynes was able to steal second to put two runners in scoring position, Haylie Delarosa made a sensational grab on Vizcaya's line drive to straight center before Noisey got caught in a fielder's choice rundown between third and home on Hallie Wilson's grounder to the pitcher. However, with runners still at second and third with two outs, Campbell notched her second triple of the day with a line shot to the right center field gap, setting the score to 5-2 before she came home on an overthrown back pick by the catcher, making it a 6-2 contest.
  • The Rams tried to make things interesting late as Zimmerman hit a one-out single up the middle before Delarosa followed with a two-out base hit up the middle herself, forcing MACU head coach Jim Gasso to go to the pen as Isabel Ray came in to attempt getting the one-out save with the tying run in the on-deck circle.
  • It looked as though MACU might get out of it during Darilek's at-bat as she hit a screaming liner toward third that Thurman nearly snagged, but she couldn't quite keep the hot shot liner in her glove as it loaded the bases. However, Haynes made the snare on Ornelas' tailing liner toward short to end the contest by a score of 6-2.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its six runs on 10 hits and committed one error while Texas Wesleyan scored its two runs on eight hits and made four errors.
  • Emylee Campbell continued to be a triples machine at Southeast High School. After becoming only the second player in program history to record two triples in a single game in a win over Central Christian two weeks ago at the venue, the senior outfielder did it again, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the MACU batting efforts. The pair of three-baggers also allowed her to move into a tie with former teammates Cailey Parsells (2022) and Mikaylee Allen (2023) for the single season program record with her seventh triple.
  • Stormy Haynes was also one of four Evangels to notch two hits in the game as the senior shortstop batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base while both Maddison Chavez and Heidi Noisey also slashed 2-for-3.
  • Kisbel Vizcaya was responsible for the only two other RBIs with her 12th double of the season, hitting 1-for-4 in the contest.
  • Chana Wolfe got the victory after allowing only two earned runs on seven hits with no walks and struck out three over 6.2 innings of work. Isabel Ray tallied the save after giving up only an infield hit before getting the final out.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 6, Texas Wesleyan 0
    • Mid-America Christian (23-15, 19-9 SAC)
    • Texas Wesleyan (20-18, 18-12 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian got things in-motion right out of the gate in the bottom of the first as Kisbel Vizcaya and Hallie Wilson started things off with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run before Emylee Campbell dropped an RBI single right down the right field line to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • Two batters later, Makenzie Thurman made it a 3-0 Evangels lead by bashing an RBI double that one-hopped to the base of the wall in center, scoring Serena Rodriguez all the way from first.
  • Texas Wesleyan's first scoring threat came in the top of the third when Kadynce Crenshaw was hit by a pitch in the first at-bat and was eventually moved down to third on a sac bunt and a groundout to short. However, the runner would stay at third as Reynosa fielded a slow comebacker to the circle for the final out to keep the three-run lead intact.
  • The Evangels also got things going in their bottom half of the third as Campbell started the frame with a walk and stole second before Isabel Ray slapped a single through the left side before eventually stealing second to put two MACU runners in scoring position. Thurman got one of the runners in on a sac fly to left to bring the score to 4-0, but that would be all the Evangels could add to their lead.
  • The Rams had another scoring chance in the top of the fourth as back-to-back one-out singles by Jaelin Ornelas and Kylie Barnes preceded a sac bunt to third put runners at second and third with two away. However, Reynosa once again got out of the jam by getting Ashley Darilek to ground out to short to end the threat.
  • In the fifth, Hallie Wilson was a one-woman wrecking crew as she started off the frame with a walk before stealing second during Campbell's at-bat. During Madisson Chavez's at-bat, the speedy senior outfielder stole third and then scored on the very next pitch that sailed wide right, setting the score to 5-0.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, it looked as though MACU added one more when Thurman hammered a deep shot to right center that bounced off the top of the wall and was thrown out at second trying to turn what was thought to be a leadoff home run into a double. While there was doubt on Thurman's deep flyball, there was no doubt during Kayten Herman's pinch-hit at-bat that followed as she blasted a massive shot over the left field wall to wrap-up the scoring at 6-0.
  • Texas Wesleyan tried to put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as an infield single to short and a single through the left side put two on. Knowing the Rams are a dangerous hitting team, Coach Gasso took no chances as he brought in MACU closer Chloeaunna Madbull-Jim to get the final out as she forced Katie Rodriguez to ground into a fielder's choice out at short to end the contest.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its six runs on nine hits while the Rams finished with five knocks, all of which were singles.
  • Gia Reynosa just narrowly missed tossing her second-straight complete game shutout as the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week allowed no runs on five hits while not issuing any walks and striking out a pair of 6.2 innings of work.
  • Makenzie Thurman led the Evangels batting efforts by slashing 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs while Kisbel Vizcaya was the only other Evangel to finish with multiple hits, slashing 2-for-3 with her 13th double of the season to go with a run scored.
  • Hallie Wilson led MACU on the basepaths with a pair of runs as she finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of stolen bases.
  • Emylee Campbell continued to be one of MACU's best run producers and scorers as she finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
  • Kayten Herman took over the team's home run lead outright with her pinch-hit solo shot to left, marking her third of the season.
  • The result marked continued success for MACU softball at Southeast High School as the Evangels improved to 4-0 at the venue after picking up a pair of 12-0, 11-3 victories over Central Christian at the venue back on Apr. 8.
  • The results were paramount for the Evangels. With MACU and Texas Wesleyan entering the day deadlocked at No. 3 in the SAC standings, the Evangels have now taken a two-game lead for the third-spot.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will have a relatively short turnaround before facing another midweek doubleheader as the Evangels will head to Southwestern Christian on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Dolese Park.
