GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian had a good early opportunity to score the game's first runs in the top of the second when Madisson Chavez hit a leadoff single through the left side before Serena Rodriguez reached on an error by the second baseman trying to get the fielder's choice putout at second with no outs. However, Southwestern Christian got out of the jam by inducing back-to-back pop outs before a groundout to short ended the frame.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Eagles found themselves scoring first as a leadoff Madison Jones double to left and a one-out Shakyrah Gladness single down the left field before advancing on the throw put two runners in scoring position. Danielle Burleson then dropped an RBI single into left for the first run while also putting runners at the corners.
  • After a walk loaded the bases, the Evangels went to their bullpen in closer Chloeaunna Madbull-Jim. While she was able to get one of SCU's best hitters in Hannah Keele to ground into a fielder's choice out from third to home, Aamiyah Roberson won a prolonged at-bat by drawing a bases-loaded walk to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • The Evangels narrowly missed putting together a solid rally in the top of the third as a leadoff Stormy Haynes single down the left field line before Hallie Wilson slapped a one-out single up the middle to put runners at first and second with the heart of the order up. However, Emylee Campbell and Chavez both had solidly hit falls flyout to the outfield to end the threat.
  • The Eagles continued to build to their lead in the bottom of the third behind a two-out rally. After inducing back-to-back pop-ups to second, Madbull-Jim lost her command as she walked Holly Elam and hit the next two batters to load the bases, forcing Coach Jim Gasso to go to his bullpen again. Forced into a tough situation, Nyssa Dunn walked the first batter she faced to score one more run before Hannah Keele slapped a single up the middle that stretched the SCU advantage to 4-0.
  • Southwestern Christian added its final insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as a leadoff Gladness single and a sac bunt set up Keele once again for an RBI single to left to set the score to 5-0.
  • MACU's best chance at scoring some runs in the contest came in the top of the sixth as Campbell hit a leadoff single up the middle and Serena Rodriguez drew a walk as both Campbell and pinch-runner Faith Kelley as Campbell nabbed a pair of bases and Kelley moved to second on a pitch in the dirt to put runners at second and third with two down. However, SCU pitcher Lainey King was once again able to get out of it by inducing a flyout to left to keep MACU off the board.
  • The Evangels tried to put together one more last rally in the top of the seventh as Heidi Noisey and Kisbel Vizcaya each drew walks in the frame with one away, but back-to-back fielder's choice putouts at third wrapped up the 5-0 result.
GAME NOTES
  • Southwestern Christian scored its five runs on eight hits and committed one error while the Evangels finished with five hits and didn't commit an error.
  • The result marked only the second time the Evangels had been shut out in a game this season, the last coming on Mar. 13 against No. 5 Oklahoma City at Allen Field.
  • Coming into the contest swinging some red-hot bats, the Evangels struggled to get the bats going against Lainey King, who held MACU to just five singles and had only a total of eight reach base with three walks drawn.
  • No MACU batter had more than one hit in the game while Kisbel Vizcaya was the only Evangel to reach base twice on a single and a walk while Emylee Campbell was the only one to steal a base with a pair of thefts.
  • The Evangels struggled in the circle as the first three MACU pitchers (Chana Wolfe, Chloeaunna Madbull-Jim and Nyssa Dunn) each gave up at least one run in two innings pitched or less before Brooke Wyatt put together a strong relief outing, retiring all four batters she faced.
  • The win for the Eagles marked only the second time since 2017 that SCU had won two or more games in the regular season series against the Evangels.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 5, Southwestern Christian 0
    • Mid-America Christian (24-16, 20-10 SAC)
    • Southwestern Christian (25-19, 16-16 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian got the action going right out of the gate as Kisbel Vizcaya ripped a leadoff double to left and Hallie Wilson blooped a Texas Leaguer double perfectly into the hole in shallow left center field before Emylee Campbell drew a walk to load the bases. While the Eagles were able to get one out at home on Madisson Chavez's fielder's choice grounder from second to home, Serena Rodriguez walked in the first run before Faith Kelley hit a grounder to short that she nearly beat out on the throw to first, setting the score to 2-0.
  • Southwestern Christian threatened to get the lead back in the bottom of the first as Hannah Keele sneaked a single through the right side before eventually being moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a grounder to third with two away. However, MACU pitcher Gia Reynosa slammed the door shut by striking out one of SCU's best hitters in Lexi Cahwee to end the threat.
  • The Evangels put together a one-out rally in the top of the third as Chavez, Rodriguez and Kelley all smacked singles to load the bases before Talyn Lerma narrowly missed sneaking a groundball through the right side of the infield as the second baseman made a sensational running scoop and beat Lerma to an uncovered first base, but allowed the third run to score on the RBI grounder to make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Eagles put together their biggest threat of the game in the bottom of the third as a Danielle Burleson leadoff single and an error on Maliyah Patton's sac bunt allowed the first two batters to reach. However, the Evangels were able to get the lead out at third on Keele's fielder's choice grounder to short. SCU managed to move the runners down on Aamiyah Roberson's sac bunt to Lerma at home, but once again, Reynosa navigated out of it as Madison Jones' liner ended up in the glove of Hallie Wilson in center for the final out.
  • MACU managed to take advantage of a costly throwing error on Vizcaya's grounder to short that would have been the second out. After Hallie Wilson slapped a grounder through the right side to put runners at first and second, Campbell had a deep flyout to right that allowed Vizcaya to get down to third before Wilson nabbed second on a stolen base. With Chavez drawing a walk to load the bases, Serena Rodriguez came up with MACU's first RBIs off a hit by driving a two-RBI double to the left center field wall to wrap-up the scoring at 5-0.
  • The Eagles once again tried to threaten in their half of the fourth as a Cahwee leadoff single and Holly Elam hit-by-pitch put runners at first and second with no one away. However, Reynosa was able to get out of the jam in a big way by getting Shakiryah Gladness to ground into an unassisted fielder's choice putout at third before getting Jessie Moralez to ground into a 5-3 double play to end the frame.
  • SCU threatened once again in the fifth when Danielle Burleson started off the frame by hitting a deep leadoff double down the left field line, but once again, Reynosa worked her way out of it by inducing a pop out, a flyout and a groundout to keep it scoreless.
  • Neither team put together much of a threat over the final few innings as the Evangels secured the 5-0 win to force the doubleheader and series split.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its five runs on nine hits and made one miscue while Southwestern Christian tallied only four hits and committed three errors.
  • Gia Reynosa continued her downright incredible run in the month of April as the contest marked her third complete game shutout in the last six outings, allowing only four hits and issued no walks while striking out three.
  • Since picking up a shutout win over the Eagles back on Apr. 12, Reynosa has allowed only one earned run in her last 33.1 innings of work for an astounding 0.21 ERA in that time frame.
  • Serena Rodriguez led MACU's batting efforts by finishing the contest slashing 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Faith Kelley and Talyn Lerma came up with MACU's two other RBIs on groundouts.
  • Hallie Wilson continued to stay productive as she batted 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to go along with a stolen base.
  • Kisbel Vizcaya tallied her 63rd hit right out of the gate with her double to left, which allowed her to climb into the program's single season top five in hits, supplanting Ashley Newman (62, 2010) and currently need two more hits to match Jackie Hilterbran (2014) and Ribbin Dorado (2018) for the second-most hits in a season in MACU history. Vizcaya is also just one more double away from breaking into the program's top 10 list for two-baggers in a season.
  • The result was a much-needed one for MACU as the victory allowed the Evangels to keep a two-game lead over Texas Wesleyan for the No. 3 spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings while also reaching 20 wins in league play for the third consecutive season with six games left in regular season.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will hit the road for the final time this weekend as the Evangels prepare to head up to Langston for a four-game set against the Lions. The series is scheduled to start on Friday with a doubleheader slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch at T.G. Green Park.
