Softball Sweeps Langston in Friday Doubleheader

LANGSTON, Okla. – The MACU Softball team dominated the series-opening doubleheader at Langston on Friday afternoon as the Evangels came away with a pair of 4-0, 9-1 victories at T.G. Green Park.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 4, Langston 0
    • Mid-America Christian (25-16, 21-10 SAC)
    • Langston (5-36, 4-29)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • The Evangels took advantage of an early Langston miscue as Kisbel Vizcaya reached on a two-base error by the Lions left fielder before Serena Rodriguez came up with a two-out RBI single up the middle to set the score to 1-0.
  • Langston put together a solid scoring chance of its own in the bottom of the first as Ja'Lucia Pruitt hit a one-out double to left, but MACU starting pitcher Gia Reynosa induced back-to-back grounds to leave the runner stranded.
  • Similar to the first, Stormy Haynes put down a bunt to start off the third and an errant throw by the third baseman allowed MACU's shortstop to get all the way to third on the three-base throwing error. Two batters later, she came in on Hallie Wilson's RBI groundout to first to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • Langston's best scoring threat of the entire game came in the bottom of the fourth when the Lions hit three consecutive one-out singles to load the bases, but once again, Reynosa locked in by getting a massive strikeout and a flyout to left to end the frame unscathed.
  • With both teams struggling to score in the conventional sense, the Evangels once again took advantage of a massive Lions error in the top of the sixth. After Emylee Campbell began the frame with a leadoff single to left and got down to second on Isabel Ray's groundout to third, she came home when the left fielder dropped Makenzie Thurman's flyball, setting the score to 3-0.
  • MACU added one more insurance run in the top of the fourth when pinch-hitter Kayten Herman started off the frame with a double to center, got down to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on Hallie Wilson's RBI fielder's choice with interference called on the runner going from second to third, wrapping up the scoring at 4-0.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its four runs on just four hits while Langston tallied seven hits, but committed four errors.
  • Gia Reynosa's incredible streak in the circle continued as the sophomore righty threw 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing only seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts. As a result, Reynosa has allowed only one unearned run over her last 39.2 innings of work and has impressively walked only one batter during that stretch.
  • Emylee Campbell tallied two of MACU's four hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in the contest.
  • Despite a 0-for-4 day from the dish from Hallie Wilson, she still managed to produce the most runs on the team with a pair of RBIs.
  • Serena Rodriguez was the only other player to come up with an RBI as the freshman designated player finished 1-for-2 with a walk drawn. Rodriguez's 25th walk of the year moved her into a tie for the sixth-most in a season with Mikaylee Allen (2021) in the MACU record book.
  • Kayten Herman has continued to produce for MACU in pinch-hitting situations as the sophomore catcher finished 1-for-1 with a double and scored the final run of the game.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 9, Langston 1 (6 Inn)
    • Mid-America Christian (26-16, 22-10 SAC)
    • Langston (5-37, 4-30)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian put together a long, sustained frame right out of the gate as the Evangels opened the scoring with an Emylee Campbell RBI single to score Stormy Haynes following a one-out single and a stolen base to make it 1-0.
  • Later in the frame, the Evangels eventually loaded the bases on base hits from Serena Rodriguez, Makenzie Thurman and Madisson Chavez before scoring the next three runs on a slew of pitching mistakes before Heidi Noisey closed out the five-run frame with an RBI single to left to make it 5-0.
  • The Evangels got the wheels in-motion immediately to start the second inning as Kisbel Vizcaya led it off with a rocket triple to center field before coming across on Haynes' RBI single to second. Haynes eventually came around to score on a misplayed grounder at third with two outs during Madisson Chavez's at-bat to bring it to a 7-0 ballgame.
  • Langston's only run of the game came as a result of MACU's only error of the contest. After Breanna Rodriguez reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the second, she got all the way down to third on a dropped flyball to center on an incredible rare error by Brooklyn Wilson before scoring on a wild pitch with two outs to make it a 7-1 game.
  • It was tough sledding for both teams over the next three innings before the Evangels finally pushed across the runs that would end the game early in the top of the sixth. After Hallie Wilson led off the frame with a triple to right, she came across to score on Vizcaya's sac fly to right to put it at 8-1. Campbell came up with a two-out triple of her own to right before another misplay at second on Serena Rodriguez's grounder allowed her to score to make it 9-1.
  • The Lions went down in-order in the bottom of the sixth to wrap-up the 9-1 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its nine runs on 14 hits and committed one error while the Lions netted their only run on one hit and tallied a pair of errors.
  • Chana Wolfe recorded her team-leading seventh complete game of the season as the junior righty allowed only one unearned run while tossing a one-hitter, finishing with two walks and six strikeouts.
  • Emylee Campbell continued to swing a blistering hot bat as she finished 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. With her eighth triple of the season, Campbell moved alone at the top of MACU's single season program record book, surpassing former teammates Cailey Parsells (2022) and Mikaylee Allen (2023).
  • The triples for Hallie Wilson and Kisbel Vizcaya also allowed the pair to continue their climb up the program's career record book as the eighth career three-bagger allowed Wilson to move alone into fourth while the sixth triple for Vizcaya placed her into a four-way tie for sixth in the books.
  • Along with Wilson, Stormy Haynes and Serena Rodriguez also finished with multiple hits as Wilson slashed 2-or-3 with a run scored, Haynes batted 2-of-4 with an RBI and scored a pair of runs while Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with a run.
  • Overall, the Evangels as a team finished with six stolen bases, tying a season-high set against Oklahoma Panhandle State back on Mar. 22.
  • With the victory, the Evangels have locked up a top-four seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament and can lock up the three-seed without playing another game if No. 6 Oklahoma City takes at least one of its two games at Texas Wesleyan on Saturday.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will close out the series at Langston on Sunday with the games being moved back a day due to inclement weather on Saturday. The Sunday twin bill is slated for a noon first pitch at T.G. Green Park.
