Softball Splits With Southwestern Christian, No. 7 Oklahoma City on Day One of SAC Tourney

YUKON, Okla. – With the opening day of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament being moved to Yukon High School due to inclement weather on Thursday night into Friday morning, the MACU Softball team was able to get the bats going in a big way.

The Evangels rallied back to pull out a 12-7 victory over Southwestern Christian to start off the day, but MACU was not quite able to come back in the night cap against second-seed No. 7 Oklahoma City. MACU battled back from five runs down late, but were unable to overcome the deficit for their first 7-5 defeat in the double elimination tourney.

GAME SUMMARY
  • After getting a quick ground out to the circle in the first at-bat of the game, Southwestern Christian was able to get things in-motion as Trinity Norwood slapped a single through the left side before Jess Moralez hammered an RBI double to the left center field wall and got down to third to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first.
  • With a runner at third, MACU starting pitcher Gia Reynosa was able to limit the damage, inducing a pop out in foul territory to first and a flyout to right to keep it a one-run game.
  • After being shut down through the first two innings, Mid-America Christian was able to get the bats going in the bottom of the third as Kisbel Vizcaya lined a one-out single to left, got down to third on an errant back pick by the catcher before Hallie Wilson brought in two with an RBI double to left center and scored on a two-base throwing error by the left fielder, making it a 2-1 MACU lead.
  • The Evangels added one later in the inning when Emylee Campbell lined a single through the right side that glanced off the glove of the first baseman and stole second before Madisson Chavez hammered an RBI double to the right center field wall to make it a 3-1 MACU advantage.
  • MACU ran into a slew of trouble in the top of the fourth as the Eagles put up a crooked six-run, six-hit frame to capture a 7-3 lead over the Evangels.
  • Mid-America Christian put together a major response in its bottom half of the fourth as a Kayten Herman one-out, pinch-hit bloop single to left center jumpstarted a five-run frame for the Evangels. After Stormy Haynes executed a perfect bunt single to put runners at first and second, Vizcaya hammered a double to right that the fielder lost in the sun, allowing Brooklyn Wilson to score to cut the deficit to 7-4.
  • In the very next at-bat, Hallie Wilson smashed a two-RBI triple down the right field line to make it a one-run game before Campbell tied it with a line drive double to straight center. Two batters later, Chavez came up clutch with an RBI single to center to plate Campbell, giving MACU the lead back at 8-7.
  • MACU continued to add some big time insurance over the next two innings by scoring three runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth. In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of singles by Isabel Ray and Stormy Haynes set up Vizcaya for a sharply hit single to second that got past the fielder on a bad hop, allowing Ray to score. The Evangels eventually perfectly executed back-to-back double steals with Hallie Wilson stealing second and Haynes nabbing home before Campbell took second to allow Wilson to steal home, bringing it to 11-7 contest.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Evangels put together a two-out rally as Ray hammered a double to right before Brooklyn Wilson dropped a triple into left center that popped out of the glove of the diving center fielder, wrapping up the scoring at 12-7.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 12 runs on a season-high 17 hits and committed one error while Southwestern Christian tallied seven runs on 12 hits with three errors.

GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian found itself in trouble in the bottom of the first as Oklahoma City managed to load the bases on a pair of singles by Iliana Ashford and Analiese Rayburn to go with an Emersen Heron walk with two away. However, MACU starting pitcher Chana Wolfe was able to get out of the jam by getting Rally Radacy to flyout to center fielder Brooklyn Wilson in the left-center field gap to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Evangels had some great chances in the top of the second as Isabel Ray ripped a double to the right-center field wall. However, Makenzie Thurman was thrown out on the 9-4-2 putout at home trying to score from first. With two outs in the frame and Ray at second, Brooklyn Wilson ripped a single to left that was hit a little too hard for Ray to score as a Stormy Haynes pop out to second ended the frame at 0-0.
  • In the top of the third, the Evangels broke through with the first run as Kisbel Vizcaya slapped a sharp liner up the middle to start it off before Hallie Wilson lined a double to the left center field gap that got by the center fielder trying to crash in and make the play, scoring Vizcaya from first to make it 1-0.
  • However, the run was short-lived as Tiffany Paul hammered a leadoff homer down the left field line to tie the game before Analiese Rayburn smashed a two-run shot over the center field wall to give the Stars the 3-1 advantage.
  • The Evangels put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth as Thurman and Ray hit back-to-back doubles to left to trim the deficit down to 3-2.
  • Unfortunately, the game was nearly put out of reach in the bottom half of the sixth when the Stars scored four runs with Tara Hoehner hitting a two-RBI single up the middle and Rayburn bashing a two-RBI double to right to set the score to 7-2.
  • Despite it being a five-run game, the Evangels didn't go down without a fight as back-to-back one-out singles by Vizcaya and Hallie Wilson set up Kayten Herman with a three-run homer to left center, trimming it to a 7-5 game.
  • The Evangels managed to get the tying run to the plate after Madisson Chavez won a foot race to first for an infield single, but Thurman's pop out to second ended the rally at 7-5.
GAME NOTES
  • Despite suffering the loss, Mid-America Christian out-hit the Oklahoma City as the Stars scored their seven runs on 10 hits while the Evangels notched their five runs on 14 hits.

  • Entering into the DP role midway through the contest, Kayten Herman was the most productive bat for MACU in the contest as her homer provided three of the team's five RBIs to finish 1-for-2 on the evening. The dinger was her team-high fourth of the season in just 56 at-bats.
