Softball Breaks Open Bats in Doubleheader Sweep over Central Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – Despite having its games moved to Southeast High School due to field conditions, the MACU Softball team broke open the big bats to complete a 12-0, 11-3 doubleheader sweep over Central Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 12, Central Christian 0 (5 Inn)
    • Mid-America Christian (14-13, 10-7 SAC)
    • Central Christian (7-22, 3-16 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • Central Christian put together their only threat of the game in the top of the first when Camryn Frick dropped a leadoff double in the left center field gap, but after a sac bunt moved the runner down to third, Chana Wolfe came away with back-to-back clutch punchouts to keep the runner stranded at first.
  • After going down in order in the first, Mid-America Christian blew the game wide open in the bottom of the second. The Evangels started the frame with Serena Rodriguez and and Kayten Herman reaching on a walk and a hit-by-pitch before Makenzie Thurman launched her first home run of the season over the center field wall to give MACU the 3-0 advantage.
  • Following Brooklyn Wilson and Stormy Haynes drawing walks, Hallie Wilson came up with a clutch by dropping a two-out, two-RBI double that just barely dropped fair down the left field line to stretch the edge to 5-0. Emylee Campbell followed it up with an RBI single slapped up the middle before Kayten Herman pushed two across on a bloop two-RBI single in-between the left fielder and shortstop after Rodriguez's infield single to extend the edge to 8-0.
  • In the third, the Evangels started the scoring when Isabel Ray reached on an infield single to second with one away before Brooklyn Wilson's sac bunt moved the speedy Ray over to third while an errant throw by the first baseman allowed Ray to score, making it a 9-0 ballgame.
  • MACU added one more in the third when Haynes drew a walk before Kisbel Vizcaya hammered a screaming line drive RBI double that bounced off the wall, setting the score to 10-0.
  • The Evangels emphatically ended the scoring in the fourth when Campbell drew a walk, stole second and moved down to third on Rodriguez's near miss homer on a deep flyball to center before Herman didn't miss in the next at-bat. The Evangels' starting pitcher launched a deep flyball to center that bounced off the top of the wall and over for a two-run shot, wrapping up the scoring at 12-0.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 12 runs on nine hits while Central Christian tallied two hits and committed a pair of errors.
  • Chana Wolfe got back in the win column in the circle. Despite being under the weather, the Evangels ace didn't allow a run and gave up just two hits and no walks while striking out six in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Sophomore catcher Kayten Herman found her mojo at the plate once again as she led the MACU bats by slashing 2-for-2, including hitting her second home run of the season to finish with a game-high four RBIs.
  • The homer for Makenzie Thurman marked the second of her Evangels career as she slashed 1-for-3 with three RBIs off the dinger.
  • Hallie Wilson also notched a multi-RBI day by going 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double to go with a run scored.
  • Emylee Campbell was the only other Evangel outside of Herman to finish with a multi-hit game as the senior utility slashed 2-for-3 for an RBI and scored a pair of runs to go with two stolen bases.
  • Kisbel Vizcaya continued her torrid doubles pace as the senior infielder notched her 10th of the season on her RBI knock in the third.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 11, Central Christian 3 (6 Inn)
    • Mid-America Christian (15-13, 11-7 SAC)
    • Central Christian (7-23, 3-17 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • The Evangels put together a major threat with one out in the bottom of the first when Hallie Wilson and Serena Rodriguez each drew a walk to go with an Emylee Campbell single through the left side to load the bases, but the Evangels unfortunately came up empty when a strikeout and a flyout to left ended the threat.
  • The Tigers put together their first threat of the game in the top of the third when a Karmen De La Cruz leadoff double and a Paris Tate single to left put runners at the corners with only one away. However, the Evangels escaped the jam as Gia Reynosa got Camryn Frick to ground out to third to hold the runner before Hallie Wilson made a sensational running grab in the left field gap on Ashley Vacarro's liner to hold the Tigers off the board.
  • MACU struggled to generate runs through the first four innings and when it appeared as though the Evangels might come up empty again in the fifth after a Kisbel Vizcaya double, Campbell delivered with two outs with a deep fly ball to right center field for an RBI triple to put MACU on the board. In the very next at-bat, Rodriguez mashed her first career Evangels homered with a no-doubt two-run shot to right-center to set the score to 3-0 through five.
  • Unfortunately, the lead would not last long for MACU as a throwing error on the leadoff batter and a walk preceded Vacarro's game-tying three-run homer to right to make it a 3-3 game in the top of the sixth. After the long ball, Brooke Wyatt relieved Reynosa and retired three of the next four batters to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the frame, the Evangels struck back with vengeance as MACU put together an eight-run frame. Following Isabel Ray's infield single and Talyn Lerma's single to right, Brooklyn Wilson got the scoring started by ripping a double down the left field line to make it a 4-3 game.
  • After Haynes drew a walk to load the bases, Vizcaya slapped a two-RBI single through the left side to stretch the lead to three. Hallie Wilson dropped a Texas Leaguer single into center once again before Emylee Campbell blasted a bases-clearing three-RBI triple once again to the right-center field gap to bring the score to 9-3.
  • MACU closed out the scoring when Rodriguez's walk allowed the Evangels to set up a successful double steal with Campbell claiming home before Brooklyn Wilson ended the game three batters later by hammering what would ultimately be a deep single to the left center field gap as Heidi Noisey reaching home from third ended the contest at 11-3.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 11 runs on its second-most hits of the year with 15 and committed an error while Central Christian tallied its three runs on five hits with one error.
  • It was a historic day at the dish for Emylee Campbell as the senior utility became just the second Evangel in program history to record two triples in the same game, finishing the contest slashing 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs and a pair of runs to go with a stolen base.
  • The Kisbel Vizcaya doubles race continued in game two as she wrapped up the game by hitting 2-for-4 with her 11th two-bagger of the year to finishing with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Brooklyn Wilson also finished with a pair of RBIs in the contest as she slashed 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • It was a historic double for Wilson as her rip down the left field line in the sixth marked the 39th of her four-year Evangels career as she moved into a tie for second with MACU Team of the Decade honoree Jackie Hilterbran (2012-15). If not for the game-ending run on her blast to the left-center field gap in her next at-bat, Wilson would have had her 40th, putting her just one behind former teammate Olivia Roberts (41, 2020-23) for the record.
  • Serena Rodriguez also tallied a pair of RBIs of her own off her first career MACU homer in the fifth, reaching base safely three times as she tallied a pair of walks to go a run and a steal.
  • Gia Reynosa pitched five strong innings with five strikeouts before the three-run homer ended her day with a no-decision. Brooke Wyatt picked up the win after coming in relief and allowing just one hit and a strikeout in an inning of work.
  • With the doubleheader sweep, MACU improved to 45-5 all-time against Central Christian, including 45 of the last 47 games since getting the program's first ever win over the Tigers by a score of 9-6 at Allen Field on Feb. 23, 2007.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will now prepare for a crucial four-game road series just up Highway 44 this weekend as the Evangels will be at Dolese Park against Southwestern Christian this weekend. MACU will open the series with a Friday doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start.
