Women’s Soccer Prevails Over the Pioneers for First Conference Win

PLAINVIEW, Texas – MACU Women's Soccer scored two late goals en route to its first Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season defeating Wayland Baptist on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Wayland Baptist struck first to force two saves out of MACU goalkeeper Ariana Solorio with a shot on goal just three minutes in, and a second coming seven minutes later, in the 10th.
    • The Evangel's attack got going with their first shot on target in the 20th minute coming from Caitlin Hirst, but a comfortable save in the end by the Pioneers' goalie, Ashley Lopez. Brae Baker entering the contests second in SAC standings in shots, had her first shot saved in the 29th minute.
    • Solorio was called upon two more times before the halftime whistle making her third save in the 31st minute, followed by a crucial save in the 43rd minute to keep MACU level right before the break.
  • Second Half
    • The Pioneers started the second half on the front foot with a corner kick inside the opening minute. Solorio made a great reflex save off a second corner kick in the 50th minute.
    • Baker fired the first shot on goal for MACU in the second half in the 51st minute to force another good save out of Lopez. She found an opening to get another shot off but was once again equal to it by Lopez in the 60th minute, keeping the scoreless game going.
    • The Evangels found the opener in the 79th minute with freshman Liv Houlston scoring her third goal of the season assisted by Deborah Silveira.
    • Madison Chavez quickly made it two, scoring her third goal of the season in the 86th minute, to put the exclamation point on the match and secured all three points for the Evangels.
MATCH NOTES
  • Both teams were even on shots with 10 apiece. However, MACU held the shots on goal advantage over WBU by a 7-6 margin.
  • Ariana Solorio finished with a career-high six saves and first career shutout, taking her season record to 2-1-1.
  • The 79th minute winner from the Evangels is the latest game winner of the season. Liv Houlston tallied her third goal of the season, her first since the opening two matches.
  • WBU goalkeeper Ashley Lopez finished the match with five saves.
  • MACU extended its all-time record against WBU to 10-8-4, winning three consecutive games against the Pioneers.
