No. 18 Baseball Dominates Defensively in 2-0, 4-2 Wins Over Wayland Baptist

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 18 MACU Baseball pitched 13 consecutive shut out innings against Wayland Baptist in Thursday afternoon's double header highlighted by Ibrahim Gonzalez's fourth complete game of the season in a 2-0 game one win. Followed by a 4-2 game two win highlighted by Nick Hill's 15th home run of the season.

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • MACU scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the first as the first three Evangel batters all reached base on balls. Cole Krepcik put a ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice, Nick Hill and Jalen King scored on the error.
  • The Evangels loaded the bases in the second inning with consecutive singles from Julio Felix and Jahzeel Groetelaers. Sammy Hallada singled to load the bags, but the Pioneers escaped from the jam by a ground out double play to end the half inning.
  • MACU saw a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the fifth with two outs after Adam Hanan and Krepcik were both walked. However, the Evangels left both runners on base again with a third out strikeout.
  • Both pitchers handled business with no base runners in the final few innings, as Ibrahim Gonzalez closed out the game in under 100 pitches for his fourth complete game of the season with his eighth and ninth strikeout to retire the final two Pioneer batters.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU scored two runs on four hits, its second lowest runs scored in a win this season. The Pioneers scored zero runs on two hits as the Evangels shut out their fourth opponent of the season.
  • Ibrahim Gonzalez dominated on the mound in game one in a 95-pitch outing striking out nine batters with zero walks on just two hits. Gonzalez pitched his fourth complete game of the season which gets him into the MACU Record Book, remaining three away of the program record seven complete games set by Robert Santana in the 2014 season and Keisy Portorreal in the 2018 season.
  • The Evangels offensively had just four hits as Julio Felix led with two hits in three at-bats. Sammy Hallada registered a hit in two attempts with a walk, while Jahzeel Groetelaers went 1-2. Jalen King and Nick Hill scored the two MACU runs.

GAME SUMMARY
  • After a dominant pitching dual in the first three and a half innings, the Evangels got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth starting with a Jalen King double to left field. Nick Hill singled to left field to get runners at the corners. After King was caught stealing at home, Cole Krepcik singled to center field to score Nick Hill from third base. However, MACU left three runners on base with a ground out to end the half inning.
  • The Evangels added three insurance runs in the fifth with a two-out single to score Dyson Kinnaman running for Jahzeel Groetelaers after a leadoff walk. Nick Hill hit his 15th home run of the season to score King's run as well for a 4-0 MACU advantage.
  • Wayland Baptist ended its 13-inning run drought in the top of the seventh as the bases loaded with three walks. A dropped fly ball scored the runners from second and third, but Liam Taft retired the following two batters with the tying run in scoring position for a 4-2 MACU win.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU finished with six hits to WBU's three. However, the Evangels committed the only error of the game in the top of the seventh, resulting in the only Pioneers' runs.  
  • Fabian Hernandez credited the win after a 6.1 innings pitched with 96 total pitches striking out seven batters on three hits conceding just one earned run. Liam Taft captured the save in the seventh with two-thirds innings pitched for his 12th save of the season, extending his program record.
  • Jalen King led the Evangels offensively with a perfect 3-3 at-bat performance, scoring a run and batting one in. Nick Hill provided a pair of hits in three attempts, including a two-run home run to tally two runs and two RBIs. Cole Krepcik's RBI single tallied MACU's sixth hit in a 1-3 outing at the dish.
  • MACU cut into the all-time record now trailing WBU 19-39, winning two consecutive games against the Pioneers' since the season sweep in the 2024 season.
