No. 18 Baseball Splits 4-3, 15-2 in Road Doubleheader Against Panhandle State

GOODWELL, Okla. – No. 18 MACU Baseball struggled to close out the Aggies in game one and suffered a 4-3 defeat. However, the Evangels came out red hot up 10-0 through three, for a 15-2 commanding victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State in game two in Goodwell, Oklahoma.

GAME SUMMARY
  • Oklahoma Panhandle State got on the board first in its first attempt at the dish with a leadoff double to left field. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored from a deep sacrifice fly to center field to put the Aggies up early 1-0.
  • The Evangels wouldn't trail long as the next half inning saw Cole Krepcik double to right field in the leadoff position. Frankie Giacalone singled and stole second, then Tuane Cope was hit by the pitch to load the bags. Jahzeel Groetelaers scored a pair with his two-RBI single to center field as Giacalone and Krepcik made it home.
  • Action returned in the bottom of the fifth as the Aggies jumped back in front as the leadoff man advanced to third. A sacrifice fly scored the equalizing run, then a wild pitch allowed the runner from third to score and lead 3-2.
  • MACU answered right back in the top of the sixth with the leadoff man aboard as Adam Hanan was hit by the pitch. Julio Felix came in to run and advanced to second from a sacrifice bunt. Felix scored as Frankie Giacalone singled up the middle, allowing Felix to score from second and tie it up at 3-3.
  • However, OPSU took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the sixth with a leadoff walk as the runner stole second and advanced to third on a bunt. An RBI single through the left side got the runner home from third.
  • The Evangels had one more chance to put points on the board in the seventh and saw the bases loaded with two outs. However, out three came shortly after as MACU fell 4-3 in game one.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU outhit OPSU by a 7-5 margin as both the Evangels and Aggies committed an error apiece.  
  • Ibrahim Gonzalez started on the mound and pitched five innings with four strikeouts. However, he allowed four hits, two walks, and one earned run. Andrws Acosta took his place in relief but got the loss in his one inning of work.
  • Frankie Giacalone led the Evangels offensively with a 2-3 plate appearance, scoring a run and batting one in. Jahzeel Groetelaers had a team-high two RBIs in a 1-2 outing.
  • MACU saw its 15-game winning streak against OPSU come to end with this loss. However, they still hold a dominant all-time record against the Aggies at 16-8.

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • MACU immediately jumped on the front foot by loading the bases in its first three batters. Cole Krepcik reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Sammy Hallada from third. With the bases loaded once again, Julio Felix was hit by the pitch for an RBI and scored Jalen King for a quick 2-0 lead.
  • The Evangels scored six in the top of the second as Elijah Lee doubled down the right field line in the leadoff spot. Jalen King's two-RBI single made it 4-0. An error allowed Nick Hill and Jalen King to score. Then consecutive hits from Krepcik and Frankie Giacalone scored the seventh and eighth run for a dominant 8-0 start.
  • MACU led 10-0 in the top of the third as King stole second and scored from Adam Hanan's double to left field. Hanan made it home as Krepcik tripled to right field.
  • The Aggies got on the board in the sixth as the first two batters reached base. An infield RBI single scored their first run. Followed by a single through the right side to cut into the MACU lead at 10-2 with one inning remaining.
  • Sammy Hallada and Jalen King reached base to start the top of the seventh and later scored as a two-RBI double from Nick Hill brought them both home. Consecutive doubles from Giacalone and Julio Felix scored a pair. Then Felix scored off an error by the third baseman as MACU closed out a dominant 15-2 win in game two.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU dominated the hit department by a 13-5 margin. The Evangels also scored 15 runs which is the second-highest mark this season.
  • Fabian Hernandez started game two and threw 98 pitches in five innings of work, striking out 11 batters. The 11 strikeouts tied his career high as an Evangel as he reached this mark for the first time this season as his previous 11 strikeout game came against College of the Ozarks on Feb. 24th, 2025. Hernandez notched his third win of the season to take his season record to 3-2. Gabriel Dixon pitched the final two innings with one strikeout, allowing no hits.
  • Five MACU batters had multiple hits, starting with Sammy Hallada with a 2-3 plate appearance and scored three runs. Nick Hill went 2-5 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs. Cole Krepcik batted in three runs in a 2-5 outing, recording a triple and a double while scoring a run. Frankie Giacalone hit 2-of-4 with a double and two RBIs. Elijah Lee batted 2-4 from the dish with a double and a run scored. Jalen King scored a team-high four runs off just one hit and two walks.
  • The Evangels stole six bases as Sammy Hallada and Jalen King both swiped a pair. The six stolen bases marked the season-high against a Sooner Athletic Conference opponent.
  • MACU restarted its win streak against OPSU, now leading 17-8 all-time against the Aggies.
