Lady Evangels Fall Short to Arkansas Tech, 3-1

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels captured the first set from the NCAA D-II Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns, but the Golden Suns took the next three frames for their 10th straight win tonight (Oct. 16) in a non-conference matchup inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

The Lady Evangels got going in the opening set when Shannon Niemeier nailed a kill to cap a 7-1 spurt that put MACU on top 14-9.

ATU battled back and took the lead at 22-21 but the Lady Evangels answered as a kill by Melissa Hoppal and another kill from Niemeier helped give MACU the opening set 26-24.

The Golden Suns had a strong response by using a 9-2 run to take a commanding 17-9 edge and went on to a 25-14 win in the second set to pull even 1-1.

Much like the second set, the Golden Suns again pulled away in the middle of the game as McCall Wilkins fueled another 9-2 run with three kills to make it 18-10 and the Golden Suns won the third set 25-17 to jump ahead 2-1.

The fourth set was back and forth throughout with both teams exchanging 11 straight points and also featured 11 ties.

The deciding moment came with it 22-22 and an attack error and kill from Katie Huff gave the Golden Suns a two-point lead and match point.

After a kill from Hannah Luedtke kept the Lady Evangels alive, a kill by Emily Todd put it away for the Golden Suns.

Niemeier led everyone with a match-high 20 kills for the Lady Evangels (3-19), who also got 32 assists from Luedtke.  Camera Broadnax had a team-high 17 digs and Jenny Pratt was right behind with 16 digs.

Huff and Wilkins led a balanced attack from the Golden Suns (18-5) with 12 kills each, while Todd and Kaci Jackson each had 10 kills.  Sierra Nighswonger tallied a match-high 45 assists and Madison Nagel recorded a match-high 20 digs.

The Lady Evangels will resume Sooner Athletic Conference action tomorrow night (Oct. 17) at John Brown University at 7 p.m. in Siloam Springs, Ark.
