Lady Evangels Notch First Conference Win With 3-1 Triumph Over St. Gregory's

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Shannon Niemeier put together a team-high 17 kills to help the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels break into the win column in the rugged Sooner Athletic Conference with a 3-1 victory over the St. Gregory's University Cavaliers tonight (Oct. 9) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

The Lady Evangels took the opening set 25-19 as Hannah Luedtke capped a 6-1 spurt with a kill that turned a four-point deficit into a 13-12 lead.

It was a 16-15 lead when Niemeier contributed two kills to fuel a 7-1 run to put the first set away.

The Cavaliers turned the tables on the Lady Evangels in the second set with a 6-1 run to come from two points down to a 17-14 lead.  The edge was 20-18 but kills by Morgan Brown and Tiphani Funk and an attack error extended the lead to five points and SGU went on to a 25-19 win to even the match 1-1.

MACU responded in the third set and jumped back on top as Niemeier again came through with two kills as part of a 5-1 run that gave the Lady Evangels a 19-13 bulge they wouldn't relinquish in a 25-21 win to regain the lead in the match.

The Lady Evangels (3-17, 1-7 SAC) then dominated the fourth set by jumping out to a commanding 13-3 lead and it was 22-12 when three kills by Niemeier closed out the set 25-14 to give MACU the win.

Niemeier hit .262 to go along with her 17 kills and Luedtke led the Lady Evangels with 24 assists and also had 19 digs.  Camera Broadnax had a match-high 23 digs to lead four Lady Evangels in double-figures. Jenny Pratt and Melissa Hoppal each contributed 12 digs.

Brown led the Cavaliers (8-13, 1-7 SAC) with 17 kills, followed by Cierra Mullins' 13 putaways.  Maggie Lasater recorded a match-high 36 assists for the Cavaliers and Daniella Rivera had a team-high 21 digs.

The Lady Evangels will next host Texas Wesleyan University Tuesday night (Oct. 14) at 7 p.m.
