OKLAHOMA CITY - Mid-America Christian University wrapped up their 2018 home volleyball schedule on Saturday afternoon by celebrating senior day and honoring their lone senior - Da'Jah Thompson. The ceremony took place after the match, which was competitive, but saw the Evangels fall.
MACU (13-14, 7-10 SAC) battled hard to give themselves a chance to extend the match, but in the end, OCU (25-3, 16-2 SAC) out-lasted MACU to take the three-set win 25-14, 25-22, 25-22.
MACU scored the first point of the afternoon on a service ace from Alexa Bass, but OCU rebounded to grab an early 6-3 lead. MACU stayed close, inching to within one at 7-6, but a 7-0 OCU run gave the stars some breathing room. After a pair of MACU points cut the gap to 14-8, OCU strung together another 6-0 spurt to take command of the set on their way to the 25-14 set win.
The teams traded 3-0 stretches early in the second frame, and the set remained close throughout. After the Stars took a 5-4 lead, they held a lead of no more than two points until MACU used a 3-0 mini-run to tie the score at 15. OCU immediately scored three straight points to take the lead back, but a 4-0 run from the Evangels gave MACU their first lead of the set at 19-18. After the teams traded points to reach a 21-20 MACU advantage, OCU rattled off four straight points to take a 24-21 lead, and after a kill from Thompson pulled MACU within two, OCU closed out the set with a kill to take the win, 25-22.
OCU took the first five points of the third stanza, and the Stars opened a 9-3 lead before MACU began to battle back. The Evangels' Elena Hadzhieva notched a kill to pull MACU within four at 10-6. Moments later, a ball handling error from OCU cut the deficit to three at 14-11. Bass notched a service ace late in the set to pull MACU within two at 20-18, and an attack error seven points later got the Evangels to within one point at 23-22. The Evangels, however, were unable to get the score tied, as OCU took the final two points to claim the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Thompson and Hadzhieva each had seven kills to pace the MACU offense. Alexa Bass dished out 25 assists to lead the way, and Gabrielle Poling had 15 digs.
MACU will hit the road on Tuesday night to go to Chickasha, Oklahoma to take on the University of Science & Arts (Okla.) (7-21, 3-14 SAC) at 7 p.m.
