WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Mid-America Christian University volleyball team headed south on Friday to open the final weekend of the 2018 regular season, and they faced arguably the toughest test of their season so far - a road match at NAIA #23 Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Unfortunately for MACU, their offense was unable to get going on Friday evening, and MACU suffered a sweep at the hands of the Lady Lions.
MACU (14-15, 8-11 SAC) had only 18 kills as a team in the match, and SAGU (26-3, 17-2) took full advantage of MACU's miscues to take the win in three sets, 25-5, 25-16, and 25-14.
Set one was a series of long runs for SAGU. The Evangels did not score consecutive points in the set, and SAGU cruised to the win in the frame, 25-5. MACU took their first lead of the night in the second set as Alexa Bass served MACU on a 5-0 run to give the Evangels a 5-4 lead early in the second stanza. As the teams struggled to gain an upper hand in the second set, MACU used a 4-0 spurt that included kills from Bass, Skylar Brower, and Da'Jah Thompson to take a 16-12 lead, but SAGU stopped the run and closed out the set with 13 straight points to take the second stanza 25-16. The momentum shift proved to be too much for MACU to overcome, as SAGU opened the third set by taking 21 of the first 30 points, and the Lady Lions closed out the match with a 25-14 win in the third stanza.
Thompson led the Evangels with eight kills, and Bass dished out 13 assists. Kaylie Walker (8) and Maegan Plunk (6) led the MACU back line in digs.
MACU will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they take on the Rams of Texas Wesleyan University (21-9, 16-3 SAC) at 1 p.m.
