MACU Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball Earn NCCAA Scholar-Team Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mid-America Christian men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball teams continue to raise the bar academically as all three of the Evangels fall sports teams were selected to the NCCAA Fall Scholar-Teams list for their stellar academic achievements on Thursday.

To be selected to the NCCAA Scholar-Teams list, a team needs to have a minimum grade-point average of 3.40 out of a 4.0 scale for all of the student-athletes on the team for the fall semester.

The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team (3.79) and men's soccer team (3.78) were exceptional as they boasted the second and third-highest GPAs of all the selected teams while the MACU volleyball team (3.63) was one of just seven volleyball programs selected to the list.

On top of their exceptional success in the classroom, all three teams performed well during the fall portions of their respective seasons as well.

The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team finished the fall portion of their season with a 6-1 record and boasted one of the best offensive teams in the nation, averaging 7.5 goals per game. The Evangels returned to action for their first split season in program history on Tuesday, as MACU came away with a 3-0 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener.

The MACU men's soccer team continued to excel under second year head coach Mitchell Sowerby. After the team won the 2019 NCCAA National Championships with a 20-3-1 record in 2019, the 2020 team went 6-1 during the fall. The Evangels picked up right where they left off in their SAC opener at SAGU on Tuesday, as they opened their first spring season (counts toward 2020 record) with a dominant 9-0 victory over the Lions.

Under first year head coach Holly McKamie, the Evangels volleyball team once again put together a successful fall campaign as the team advanced to just its second ever NCCAA Division I National Championship as the entered the event with a 9-4 record. The Evangels strung together a nine-match winning streak during the fall, the longest streak since the program moved up to the DI level in 2007.

Much like the soccer teams, the volleyball team also started its spring portion of the season this week, as it picked up a 3-0 win over Science & Arts on Wednesday after suffering a hard-fought 3-1 defeat at John Brown on Monday to open SAC play.
