CHICKASHA, Okla. – For the first time since the 2010 season, the Mid-America Christian baseball team won the season series against No. 2 Science & Arts as the Evangels pitched a 2-0 shutout win over the Drovers at Bill Smith Ballpark on Saturday.

    • Science & Arts (10-5, 4-2 SAC)
TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME SUMMARY
  • It appeared the top of the first was going to be a quick one for the Evangels after Isaiah Haddad and Payton Walk each struck out. However, Mid-America Christian quickly turned the tides when Grant Roberts slapped a single to left-center and then Yan Ely Adames reached on a walk. That setup Edgar Martinez, who blasted a double down the left field line to score pinch runner Brandon Reese and Adames to make it a 2-0 Evangels lead.
  • The Drovers put together their first serious threat in the bottom of the second after drawing back-to-back walks to lead off the frame, but senior starter Jaily Paredes quickly got out of the jam by inducing a 6-4-3 double play followed by a lineout to center to end the threat.
  • USAO put together another major threat in the fifth inning when the Drovers loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks with one out, but then Paredes once again induced a huge double play ball bounced to Haddad at second who relayed it to first for the out to get out of the jam.
  • Mid-America Christian's best chance at adding some insurance came in the eighth when Walk drew a walk and Roberts knocked a single to left, but the Drovers prevented another score by getting Adames to flyout to right-center.
  • Science & Arts' had one more great opportunity when it was able to get a pair of runners aboard on a hit-by-pitch and a single with one out in the eighth, but MACU reliever Frensly Leito was able to strike out Joey Pena before Joshua Fernandez made a nice running catch on a deep fly to left field to once again thwart the Drovers.
  • MACU closer Bernardo Moreno came in the ninth and shut the door on the Drovers by tossing a clean inning for his first save of the season.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its two runs on six hits with no errors while the Drovers only notched two hits without committing any miscues.
  • The MACU pitching staff tossed its third shutout of the season and its first combined shutout as Jaily Paredes got the win after throwing six scoreless while Frensly Leito held it with two scoreless innings and Bernardo Moreno put in a 1-2-3 ninth.
  • Paredes improved to 2-1 on the season and lowered his season earned run average to 0.66.
  • With just one RBI entering the day, Edgar Martinez was finally able to break through with the bat by getting his second and third of the season on his two-RBI knock in the first inning.
  • Grant Roberts tallied two of the Evangels' six hits with a pair of singles in a 2-of-4 performance from the plate.
  • With the victory and the 6-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader on Thursday, it was just the second time since the program joined the NAIA in 2008 that MACU won the season series against the Drovers. The last time it happened was during the 2010 campaign, when MACU bounced back from an 18-8 loss to the Drovers in Chickasha, Okla. on Mar. 26, 2010 with a 9-8, 4-2 doubleheader sweep at the MACU Baseball Field on Mar. 27, 2010.
  • It was also MACU's first win in Chickasha since the 2005 campaign, when MACU swept the Drovers 7-3, 8-3 in an Apr. 7 doubleheader.
ON DECK
  • Mid-America Christian will return home on Wednesday, Mar. 17 for a non-conference doubleheader against Dallas Christian. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for a noon first pitch at the MACU Baseball Field.
