Baseball Walks Off Central Christian To Open Three-Game Sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian baseball team rallied from three runs down late to walk-off on Edgar Martinez's RBI single to come away with a 5-4 victory to open a doubleheader sweep that was capped off with a 5-3 win at the MACU Baseball Field on Friday afternoon. The dramatic wins ignited the Evangel bats on Saturday as MACU slugged its way to a 17-12 victory in the finale on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its five runs on seven hits and committed one error while the Tigers finished with four runs on five hits and made two miscues.
  • The victory was the Evangels first walk-off win of the season. The last time MACU walked off against an opponent at the MACU Baseball Field, it came in similar fashion to Central Christian on Apr. 20, 2019. In that win, Evangels rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the seventh as Romeo Rinehart scored on Luis Sanchez's walk-off SAC fly to left field to complete the 4-3 victory.
  • It was also MACU's first win against a Sooner Athletic Conference opponent in the opener of a three-game series. In their four previous openers, the Evangels went 0-4 to their SAC counterparts.
  • Isaiah Haddad led the MACU bats by going 3-of-4 with a pair of stolen bases, an RBI and came around to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Edgar Martinez swatted 2-for-4 with the Evangels' lone extra base, being a double and turning in a run as well as the game-winning RBI infield single.

  • Julian Fernandez led the MACU bats as the only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, the go-ahead RBI in the sixth and scored the final run of the game. Chance Bufford led the team with a pair of RBIs, going 1-for-2 on an RBI single and a SAC fly.
  • Brayan Garcia had a phenomenal outing in relief, not allowing a single baserunner to reach over three innings of work while recording three strikeouts.

  • The Evangels drew a season-high 12 walks while hitting the second-most home runs in a game this season (3).
  • MACU also stole a season-high nine bases, with Isaiah Haddad and Brandon Reese nabbing three apiece. By getting three more stolen bags in the finale, Haddad tied Eridane Dune for the second-most steals in a single season (20) in the NAIA Era. The Fresno, Calif. product sits only behind Sam Lewis (39, 2010) for the most steals in a single season.
  • Both Edgar Martinez and Joshua Fernandez drove in a season-high three RBIs apiece. Martinez smashed his second home run of the season in the three-RBI effort.
  • Yan Ely Adames led the MACU bats by going 4-for-6, hitting his team-leading seventh homer of the season to drive in a pair of RBIs and scored three runs, bringing his season totals to 36 batted in while crossing home plate 29 times.
  • The 29 combined runs made it the highest scoring game the Evangels have played in all season. The previous high came in MACU's 19-4 victory at Dallas Christian on Mar. 17.

  • Mid-America Christian will be back in-action on Monday as it will head down the road to Moore, Okla. to take on Randall in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
