OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its men's and women's basketball Scholar-Athlete list on Wednesday as eight members from the Mid-America Christian women's basketball program earned the honor alongside Toni Kumanovic from the MACU men's basketball team.
To qualify for SAC Scholar-Athlete accolades, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average while appearing on the eligibility certificate for an NAIA-recognized sport. The student-athlete must also be a junior academically and attended the nominating institution for at least two full years or one full year as a collegiate transfer.
Kumanovic was one of the leaders that helped guide the MACU men's basketball squad to its third straight NAIA National Championship Tournament. The Evangels ended the campaign with a 12-5 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NAIA tourney after defeating Holy Cross (Ind.) 69-63 in Park City, Kan. on Mar. 12.
The Mid-America Christian women's basketball team also put together one of its most successful seasons both academically and athletically as the program earned its first ever share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title after finishing the COVID-19 impacted season with a 6-0 league mark and a 9-3 overall record.
On top of being named the SAC co-Champions, the Evangels also earned a bid to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the first time since the program joined the association in 2007.
