Spring Esports Puts Together Best Season of Competition, Braces for NACE Tournament Play

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU Esports teams closed out NACE Varsity Plus regular season competition last week and after putting together one of the best all-around seasons in program history, the five MACU Esports teams will be looking to make some noise with the postseason tournaments starting next week.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Rocket League team won its sixth regular season championship (includes tenure in NECC and OACE) in the last four years while the Overwatch 2 team captured its second-straight spring regular season championship.

Overall, the five Esports programs of Rocket League, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Valorant and Super Smash Bros. collectively finished with 23-8 record with all of the teams turning in a .500 or better record.

With NACE regular season competition concluding this week, all of the Evangels' Esports teams will be officially finding out their postseason seeding and matchups on Friday with tournament play starting next week.

Rocket League

After capturing the NACE Varsity Plus East 4 regular season and tournament championships in the fall, the MACU Rocket League team continued its dominance in the East 4 Division as the Evangels finished off the season with an unblemished 7-0 record, edging out Northwest Missouri State for the outright title.

While MACU won every match during the spring season, the wins did not come easy as the Evangels had four of its seven matches come down to the must-win fifth game, including both of its matches in the doubleheader on March 10 where MACU claimed 3-2 victories over Texas A&M-International and Oklahoma Christian.

Ironically, the only match MACU won in three-straight games was its matchup against its biggest competition in Northwest Missouri State as the Evangel ran away with the 3-2, 4-2, 6-1 victory over the Bearcats.

The three-man tandem of Javier Cerrillo Soto (Cl0ver), Jadon Maxwell (Brainz) and Luis Reyes (S0l) have been a remarkable trio for the Evangels the last two years as they have won three regular season and two tournament titles over the last four semesters.

By earning the No. 1 seed, the Evangels will have a bye and an automatic berth to the NACE Varsity Plus East 4 Semifinal round, where it will face the winner of Missouri Western and Texas A&M-International for the right to play in the championship match.

Overwatch 2

The MACU Overwatch 2 team went through a bit of a rebuilding season in the fall after capturing the NACE Varsity Plus West-Central 2 Season and Tournament Championships in the spring of 2024.

After going 3-5 (3-4 in regular season) in the fall, the Evangels found a new stride competing in the East 6 Division in the spring, completing the regular season with a 5-1 record to finish in a three-way tie for the season championship along with Cottey (Kan.) and Manchester (Ind.).

The Evangels opened their season against its co-champion counterparts as MACU defeated Cottey 3-1 to start the spring campaign on Feb. 11 before falling to Manchester 3-1 on Feb. 18. However, with Cottey defeating Manchester 3-0 on Mar. 3, it has created a three-way deadlock for the top spot in the East 6 Division.

Behind team captains Aaron Dodson (Immortal) and Rushell Herrera (SpicyGhost) as well as starters Hayden Linville (Golden), Lantis Wolfe (Bug) and James Ramey (Crewdog), the squad was especially strong closing out the season as MACU turned in a 3-0 doubleheader sweep over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Ashland (Ohio) on Mar. 11.

With league play still going this week and there being a three-way tie for first in the division standings, the Evangels are currently awaiting to see what seed they will be for the postseason tournament, which will be determined on Friday.

Valorant

The MACU Valorant team completed its first semester of competition as a team in the fall with the NECC and after having a tough first season by going 1-6 in NECC play and 1-8 overall, the Evangels transition to the NACE Varsity Plus East 7 Division in the spring could not have gone better.

Co-Captained by Lantis Wolfe (Mantis) and Joshua Waller (GhostMP) while returning one of its top players from the fall in Myles Garcia (NoBueno), the Evangels added two huge additions to the starting roster in the spring in Lucas Webb (Mcflurried14) and Cooper Robinson (Minicooper78).

With this five-player squad, MACU completely flipped the script by closing out the regular season with a 5-1 record to finish in second place in the East 7 Division.

The Evangels closed out the regular season with a massive matchup against St. Andrews (N.C.) as both teams came into the match tied for second in the East 7 standings. In that matchup, the Evangels dominated both rounds by scores of 13-6 and 13-5 to come away with the 2-0 victory.

League of Legends

Much like the Valorant squad that had a tough fall season in the NECC, the MACU League of Legends team saw some much improved success joining the NACE Varsity Plus West-Central 2 Division in the spring.

Overall, the Evangels rounded out the spring campaign with a 3-3 record. The team captained by John Gia (Yohon) and joined by James Orquiz (Exiledmex), Enzo Nogue (Noguetti), Alanna Winston (Airyn) and Jorge Rios (Thoricfish), opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Concordia (Minn.) on Feb. 4.

While MACU put up two tough fights in a pair of 2-1 defeats to two of the top teams in the West-Central 2 Division in Tulsa (Okla.) and Ozarks Tech (Mo.), the Evangels picked up a pair of forfeit victories in two of the last three matches to finish fourth in the standings.

Super Smash Bros.

Despite being without the team's ace from the fall, the MACU Super Smash Bros. team put together a solid season competing in the West-Central 2 Division in the spring.

Along with captains Elijah Bates and James Orquiz, the team consisting of Jack Search, Cesar Stokes, Austin Kyle and Hope Walker put together a remarkable start to the season.

Despite suffering a 2-0 loss to Oral Roberts (Okla.) on Feb. 6, the Evangels bounced back by winning three-straight 2-0 victories over Long Beach City (Calif.), Southern Alberta Tech (Canada) and Colorado Mesa.

Even though MACU had a tough finish to the regular season with a pair of 2-0 doubleheader defeats to Jamestown (Va.) and Wichita State (Kan.) on Mar. 13, both teams ended up finishing as the top two teams in the West-Central 2 Division.

Overall, the Evangels finished fourth in the division with a 3-3 mark and will await to see its final seeding on Friday for the postseason tournament.
