Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Returning all-conference selections
Julia Nimal and
Kassie Byrd scored two goals, while newcomer
Kaci Power also tallied two scores to lead the Mid-America Christian Lady Evangels to a convincing 7-0 victory over the Southwestern Christian Lady Eagles before a large crowd in their home opener Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 6) at Evangel Field.
It took a while for the Lady Evangels (2-0) to get going, but once they did they immediately pulled away.
The Lady Evangels had 22 shots in the first half, but could muster only one score, a goal by Byrd off an assist from Power in the 40th minute.
But the second half was a different story, as Nimal began the onslaught by controlling her own missed shot and scoring at the 53:08 mark.
Nimal then assisted on Byrd's second goal in the 62nd minute for a 3-0 lead.
Just three minutes later,
Chelsea Swisher scored from 20 yards out for a four-goal advantage.
Power then scored two goals in a span of 14 minutes, the second off a pass from Nimal to the middle as the Lady Evangels continued the second half explosion.
Nimal rounded out the scoring by dribbling in a shot from the right side with just 38 seconds remaining.
Melissa Dobie made six saves for the Lady Evangels in recording her second shutout of the season after shutting out 11 opponents last year.
Lady Eagles' goalkeeper Allie McIntosh was busy from the outset and made 18 saves, including 11 in the opening half.
The Lady Evangels out-shot the Lady Eagles by a whopping 43-8 overall and 25-6 on-goal.
The Lady Evangels will next play a pair of matches in Austin, Texas, starting with a matchup against host Huston-Tillotson on Friday evening (Sept. 9) at 5 p.m. They will then face Our Lady of the Lake at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 10).
