OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sherri Collins recorded a hat trick and Bekah Stewart added two goals as the second-seeded Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm eliminated the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels 5-1 in the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Regional tournament Friday afternoon (Nov. 16) at MACU Soccer Field. The win moves SNU into the regional title game tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 17) against top-seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan University at noon, once again at MACU Soccer Field.
Julia Nimal got the Lady Evangels on the board first by nailing a shot from 25 yards away from
Brianna Jezioro just 32 seconds into the match.
The Lady Evangels (9-10) then had an opportunity to go ahead by two scores, but close range shots from Nimal and
Kassie Byrd were saved by Yoli Zamarripa and then a shot from
Michelle Medina sailed just wide of the net.
That's all the opening the Crimson Storm (10-7-1) needed as Collins got free in the middle of the box for her first goal at the 20:06 mark.
Collins then put SNU on top just 1:17 later by putting in a shot off the post by Sara Nazary.
Stewart kept up the onslaught with a goal off an assist from Kendra Nixon at the 25:55 mark for a 3-1 lead that the Crimson Storm carried into the half.
Collins completed the hat trick with a goal from Sara Eguren in the 69th minute and Stewart finished the scoring at the 71:21 mark.
Byrd had a team-high four shots for the Lady Evangels, while Collins and Kayla Thompson each recorded a match-high five shots.
Melissa Dobie made six saves for the Lady Evangels and Zamarripa stopped five shots for SNU.
This match marks the end of an impressive run for seniors Byrd, Nimal, Dobie, and
Karen Moreno. The four seniors played a key role in revitalizing the MACU Women's Soccer program, including the best two seasons in the program's history with 16 wins in 2010 and 12 victories in 2011.
