Lady Evangels Thwart SAGU 5-0 in season opener

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The trio of Kassie Byrd, Julia Nimal and Chelsea Swisher made sure the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels' season would get off on the right note by combining for all five goals of a 5-0 rout of the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lady Lions in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon (Aug. 24) at MACU Soccer Field.

If you blinked you probably missed the Lady Evangels' first goal, as Nimal found Byrd on a cross just 45 seconds into the match for a quick 1-0 lead.

The duo again hooked up as Nimal once again fed Byrd for a score at the 12:35 mark.

Nimal then got into the scoring act in the 60th minute by banging in a free kick from 30 yards away for a commanding three-goal lead.

It was then Swisher who finished things off with two scores 10 minutes apart.  Her first goal came off a rebound of a shot by Byrd that hit the post at the 67:00 mark.  She then found the net again in the 77th minute to round out the scoring for the Lady Evangels.

Melissa Dobie, the Sooner Athletic Conference's leader in shutouts over the past two seasons, blanked the Lady Lions on four saves.

Amber Belisle stopped seven shots in the net for the Lady Lions.

MACU out-shot SAGU by a commanding 22-5 tally overall and 12-4 on-goal.

Next up for the Lady Evangels is a matchup with former SAC rival Oklahoma Christian University on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
