Lady Evangels Hold On For 2-1 Win Over Bethel

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels improved to 7-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the Bethel College (Kan.) Lady Threshers today (Sept. 24) at MACU Soccer Field.

The match was scoreless until the 24th minute when a foul in the box led to a successful penalty kick by Cici Mitchell to put the Lady Evangels on top.

Karla Cabello then put the Lady Evangels up 2-0 with a score at the 28:58 mark.

The Lady Evangels maintained that lead until the Lady Threshers made it interesting when Ariel Williams crossed in a goal in the 72nd minute to make it a one score game.

But MACU tightened up and didn't allow the Lady Threshers another shot-on-goal the rest of the way to hold on for the victory.

The Lady Evangels only scored twice despite out-shooting Bethel 37-6 overall and 18-3 on-goal.

Lady Threshers' goalkeeper Madison Wiles played a big part in limiting the Lady Evangels with 16 saves.  Kaitlyn Whitten started and played the first half for MACU and stopped one shot.  Taylor Files then played 29 minutes of the second half before giving way to Kenady Maynard for the final 16 minutes.

Kaci Power had a team-high nine shots to lead the Lady Evangels, followed by Cabello's eight shots.

Kelsey Peterson recorded four of the Lady Thresher's six shots in the match.

The Lady Evangels will next open up Sooner Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon (Sept. 26) at Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas.
