MCPHERSON, Kan. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Mid-America Christian University had to make an unscheduled trip north to McPherson, Kansas to make up a Sooner Athletic Conference match at Central Christian University. The match, which had originally been scheduled for October 14th, had to be played, as the result held implications for the upcoming SAC postseason tournament.
After a slow start to the match, the Lady Evangels (10-6, 5-5 SAC) found their rhythm in the second half, snapping a three match skid with a 3-0 win over the Tigers (4-14, 1-9 SAC) to leapfrog St. Gregory's University for the sixth seed in the SAC tournament.
The Tigers recorded four of the first five shots on goal in the match, and MACU goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt had to be sharp to keep the match scoreless. On the other end, MACU generated chances, but in the opening frame, the Lady Evangels were unable to put shots on frame consistently, and the game went to halftime as a scoreless draw.
In the second half, MACU turned up the pressure, and it paid dividends almost immediately. Less than five minutes into the second frame, Brittney Stephens found Allyson Pamplin in the box, and Pamplin rifled a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to give MACU the first goal of the contest. In the 53rd minute, Casey Riley lofted in a free kick from 35 yards out to double the Lady Evangels lead, and less than three minutes later, Kierra Morgan took a shot that deflected off a defender and went in under the bar to push the MACU advantage to 3-0. The Lady Evangels kept the pressure on as the clock wound down, out-shooting the Tigers 5-1 over the final 35 minutes, and The Lady Evangels cruised in with the 3-0 win.
Starwalt (8-5) notched her fourth shutout of her freshman campaign, making four saves in the win. Goldie Bougher (4-13) made five stops in the loss for the Tigers.
The win ensures that MACU will have to head to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the SAC's #3 seed, the Texas Wesleyan University Rams (13-3) in the SAC Quarterfinal round. The match will take place on Friday, November 3 at 7 p.m.
