Bounces Go Against MACU; Women's Soccer Falls to CCCK

OKLAHOMA CITY - For much of the evening, the Mid-America Christian University women's soccer team outplayed the Central Christian College of Kansas Tigers. As the evening wore on, however, MACU was unable to find the back of the net, and the Evangels dropped another heartbreaker.

MACU (4-7, 0-4 SAC) hit a crossbar and saw several other shots come agonizingly close, and Central Christian (9-4, 4-1 SAC) took advantage of a turnover in the 75th minute and the Tigers took the win 1-0.

The first half was slow, as the teams felt out the process. The Tigers out-shot MACU 5-4 in the first half, including the only two shots on goal in the period, but Jennifer Starwalt was equal to the task on each opportunity, and at the half, the match remained scoreless.

Brittney Stephens found the target in the 48th minute, but Central Christian's Charis Ball deflected the ball and watched as it trickled just wide of the post. That proved to be a pivotal moment, as Central Christian began to ratchet up the pressure. Starwalt made saves in the 60th and 64th minute, and 11 minutes later, the Tigers found paydirt.

Lisette Whiteside headed a pass to Mariah Godinez, and Godinez looped a soft shot over the head of Starwalt, and the Tigers took a 1-0 lead.

Moments later, MACU rang a shot off the crossbar, and Ball was forced to be sharp in the waning moments, making a pair of saves in the final 10 minutes, and as MACU pressed forward trying to find the match-tying goal, the Tigers kept the ball on the perimeter and the clock ran out.

Starwalt (2-7) made five saves, and she allowed only one goal in taking the tough loss in goal. Ball stopped all four shots on goal she faced in the victory.

MACU will take the weekend to regroup before heading out on their last road trip of the season next week. The Evangels will head to Waxahachie, Texas to take on the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions (5-8-1, 0-5 SAC) at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
