OKLAHOMA CITY - The 2018 regular season wrapped up for the Mid-America Christian University women's soccer team on Friday afternoon, as the Evangels celebrated Senior Day in their home finale. MACU honored three seniors from the women's program, and thanks to a hard-fought effort in the defensive half, the Evangels kept themselves in the match against Oklahoma City University.
OCU (9-2-2, 5-1-1 SAC) scored a goal in the fifth minute, but MACU goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt did everything she could to keep it close from there, backstopping MACU (6-9, 2-6 SAC) and keeping the final margin to just 2-0 OCU.
OCU nearly broke the ice just over three minutes into the contest when Madi Caputo put a shot off the bottom of the crossbar, but it stayed out and Starwalt pounced on the rebound to preserve the scoreless tie. Caputo did open the scoring just over a minute later when she curled a beauty of a shot into the upper corner of the net behind Starwalt to give OCU the lead, but the sophomre Starwalt was not shaken. She made four brilliant saves in the first half of the match, and at intermission, the score remained 1-0 Oklahoma City.
As the MACU offense struggled to try and generate chances, Starwalt continued to shine on the other. Twice Starwalt robbed OCU shooters with her hands on reflex playes, as she kept MACU within one into the 80th minute when a seemingly harmless play led to a goal from Rachel Brantley that put OCU up 2-0, which proved to be the final score.
Starwalt finished the match with 10 saves.
MACU must now wait to see how the rest of the Sooner Athletic Conference standings shake out before they find out where they will go for the opening round of the Conference Championship. The bracket will be released next week, and the Evangels know they will be either the seventh or eighth seed, pending the results for the Southerstern Christian University Eagles.
