OKLAHOMA CITY – Through the first half hour of their home opening match, the Mid-America Christian University women's soccer team had experienced little offensive success in the month of September. From that point on, the Evangels found their rhythm, and the goals came quickly.
MACU (2-3) trailed 1-0 in the 33rd minute, when Allyson Pamplin scored to tie it, opening the floodgates for the Evangels who rallied to beat the Paul Quinn College Tigers (2-3) 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers struck first on their first shot of the game. Liz Campos took possession of the ball on the right wing side, and she lofted a shot over the head of MACU goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt and into the left upper corner of the net to give PQC the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers continued to control the possession of the ball for the next 10 minutes, but the Evangels kept them out of dangerous areas, and in the 31st minute, the Evangels brought on Pyper Steinweiss as a substitute, and Steinweiss made an immediate impact. She took control of the ball just over a minute later deep on the offensive right wing. She carried the ball in from the corner toward the near post and fired a pass across to Pamplin who deflected it home to tie the score at 1-1.
It took just four minutes after the tying goal for MACU to take the lead. Brittney Stephens took a pass at the top of the box, and she dribbled past a defender then lofted a shot over Alexya Soto and into the side netting on the opposite wing to give MACU a 2-1 lead, which the Evangels carried into halftime.
Priscilla Armenta scored her first goal as an Evangel in the 53rd minute, taking a shot from 20 yards out with the left foot and putting it into the upper right corner of the goal to provide MACU an insurance goal, and the Evangels took complete control of the match. The goal came on the eighth of what would be 12 straight shots for MACU to open the second frame, and in the 86th minute, Armenta scored again from nearly the same spot. This time, her shot was low and at Soto, but After Soto made the initial save, the ball bounced in the air, and Soto watched helplessly as the ball landed and the spin on the shot carried it into the goal.
Starwalt (2-3) allowed one goal and made one save in the victory, while Soto (1-1) stopped eight shots and allowed four tallies in the match.
The Evangels were slated to be in action on Tuesday, but their scheduled match against Dallas Christian College has been canceled. The next scheduled match for the Evangels is on September 25, when MACU will open Sooner Athletic Conference play against NAIA #7 John Brown University (5-1) at 2 p.m.
