OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team will wrap up the 2020 portion of its split season on the road as the Evangels will travel to Waxahachie, Texas to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Nov. 13.
LAST TIME OUT
Mid-America Christian hosted Oklahoma Panhandle State in a home-away-from-home match played at the Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex in Bethany, Oklahoma on Nov. 6, as the Evangels came away with their fourth double-digit goal scoring match of the season in the 10-2 victory over the Aggies.
Junior forward
Joanne Nakirya was stellar in the attack for the Evangels, tying MACU's single match goal scoring record with five and recorded the second-most points in program history with 11 to garner the Sooner Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week award.
Kelsey Henry pushed across the game-winner in the 12
th minute while six different Evangels scored in the opening half with
Johanna Behrens,
Marga Franco, Nakirya,
Alex White and
Veronica Lopez Cordero also finding the back of the net to give the Evangels a 6-0 lead at the halftime break.
Nakirya scored all four of MACU's goals in the second half while Oklahoma Panhandle State scored the first and last goals of the half to close out the match.
SCOUTING THE LADY LIONS
Southwestern Assemblies of God will enter the Friday afternoon contest with a 3-0 record, but have been out of action for nearly three weeks with the team's last win coming against LSU-Shreveport in a 3-2 affair at home back on Oct. 27 following a 2-1 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State just four days prior.
Kyleigh Cano, D'Angelah Allen and Jordan Shelton have been responsible for 10 of the Lady Lions' goals this season, with Cano scoring four while Allen and Shelton pitching in three apiece. Cano is the team's leader with three assists for a total of 11 points.
Zoe Boldt and Taylor Jackson have been splitting time at goal for SAGU this season, as Boldt holds a 2-0 record and has yet to allow a goal, making seven saves for a 1.000 save percentage. Jackson is 1-0 thus far and is allowing a 3.0 goals against average, making 15 saves for an .833 save percentage.
HISTORY WITH THE LADY LIONS
Since 2007, Mid-America Christian has amassed a 12-2 record against SAGU, including winning the last three matches. In last season's meeting at Evangel Field on Oct. 12, 2019, the Evangels scored early on a
Kelsey Henry 13
th minute goal and controlled the pace for the rest of the way to cruise to a 4-0 victory. However, MACU will be seeking a better result than the last time it played in Waxahachie. In that meeting, SAGU scored the game-winner with just over five minutes remaining and held on for a 2-1 win over the Evangels.
NEXT ONE UP
Despite being without one of the top goal scorers in the NAIA in
Liz Lozano for the last three games, Mid-America Christian has carried with it the "next player up" mentality. In MACU's 12-0 win over Manhattan Christian on Oct. 17, it was
Kyleigh Gibson who stepped up, scoring four goals while
Joanne Nakirya and
Veronica Lopez Cordero each scored a pair of goals in the win. Despite suffering a 3-2 loss at home to Science & Arts on Oct. 23, the Evangels challenged the national powerhouse as the game was tied at one heading into the halftime break while Gibson and
Brooklyn Fink each netted a goal for MACU. Nakirya came up big with the Evangels in their last win over Oklahoma Panhandle State, recording five scores with five other players chipping in with first half scores.
SCORING PROWESS
Of the 129 NAIA teams to compete during the fall season, Mid-America Christian has continued to maintain its incredible goal-scoring prowess. The Evangels rank as the most proficient scoring team in the nation, averaging 8.33 goals per game, two goals higher than the next closest team (Science & Arts, 6.33). One factor that has set the Evangels apart this season is their passing, as they also rank first in the NAIA in assists per game (7.17), tallying nearly two more than second-ranked Science & Arts (5.33).
