Evangels Tally 31 On SAC Spring All-Academic Team

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its 2020-21 Spring Academic All-Conference Team as 31 student-athletes from the Mid-America Christian baseball and softball programs garnered the accolade on Thursday.

To be selected to the Academic All-SAC Team, a student-athlete must be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior by academic standing, attended the nominating institution for fall and spring semesters during the 2020-21 academic year and maintained at least a 3.25 grade point average.

The MACU softball program displayed a high level of excellence during the academic year, placing 19 of its student-athletes on the list, the most of any softball program in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Of those that made the list, eight members from the program achieved a 4.0 GPA for the academic year (Allene Dennis, Brookelyn Gilmore, Chloe Hodge, Kassie Martin, Regan Martin, Cailey Parsells, Hannah Robbins).

On top of the academic level of excellence, the softball program reached new heights on the field during the 2021 season. MACU turned in its winningest campaign in program history, amassing a 37-14 overall record on its way to winning the squad's first ever NCCAA National Championship after defeating Concordia-Ann Arbor (Mich.) 3-2 in eight innings on Olivia Roberts' suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth on May 20.

The Evangels also reached new heights in Sooner Athletic Conference play, finishing with a league mark of 21-9, its best conference mark since joining the league in 2008.

The baseball program also represented MACU well in the Academic All-SAC honors, placing 12 of its student-athletes on the esteemed list. Overall, five Evangels recorded a 4.0 GPA between the fall and spring semesters (Cameron Brown, Brendan Farris, Joshua Fernandez, Arcangel Soto, Payton Walk).

By closing out the year with a 24-26 record, the Evangels notched their second-winningest season since joining the SAC in 2008.
