OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its 2020-21 Baseball Scholar-Athletes on Thursday as three Evangels lauded the honor.
To qualify for the accolade, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average while appearing on the eligibility certificate for an NAIA-recognized sport. The student-athlete must also be a junior by academic standing as well as have attended the nominating institution for at minimum two full years or one full year as a collegiate transfer.
Two of MACU's recipients in Joshua Fernandez and Arcangel Soto maintained a 4.0 GPA through the end of the academic year while Andres Gonzalez joined them on the esteemed list.
Both Fernandez and Gonzalez are collecting their second SAC Scholar-Athlete awards while Soto is earning his first honor. Soto graduated this spring from MACU with the program's fourth-most strikeouts in the NAIA Era (2008-present) with 153, notching 57 of them during the 2021 season.
As a team, Mid-America Christian finished with its second-highest winning percentage since joining the SAC in 2008, closing out the campaign with a 24-26 (.480) overall record.
