Softball Slams SAGU in 8-0, 9-1 Senior Day Sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY – After struggling offensively in Friday's doubleheader split against Southwestern Assemblies of God, the MACU softball bats came alive against the Lady Lions on Senior Day as the Evangels cruised to a pair of 8-0, 9-1 victories at Allen Field on Saturday.

Between the first and second game, the Evangels honored their seven graduating seniors who were playing in their final regular season home games: Mikaylee Allen, Rachel Humburg, Adyson Bradley, Olivia Roberts, Cailey Parsells, Hannah Robbins and Janessa Larman.

PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its eight runs on 10 hits while Southwestern Assemblies of God was held to just five hits.
  • The Lady Lions mustered an early major threat when Airiana Magdaleno led off the top of the first with a double to the left field corner and got moved over to third on a sac bunt. However, MACU starting pitcher Rachel Eggleston danced her way out of the jam by getting Trista Ford to strike out before Brooke Kinnibrugh popped out to short to end the threat.
  • The Evangels went down in order through the first two innings, but senior first baseman Olivia Roberts gave MACU a jolt of momentum in the top of the third when she lifted a lead-off solo home run that just climbed over the left field fence to give the Evangels a 1-0 lead.
  • Following the Roberts solo shot, MACU tallied four straight singles as the Evangels went station to station on base hits from Aurelia Holguin, Mikaylee Allen and Cailey Parsells preceding a Macy Stockton pinch-hit single to center to score pinch-runner Stormy Haynes from third, making it a 2-0 game.
  • SAGU nearly stopped MACU after getting Janessa Larman to pop out to second and Emylee Campbell to ground into a fielder's choice out at home, but Rachel Humburg gave the Evangels some breathing room when she hit a single up the middle that deflected off second base to score two runs before Brooklyn Wilson launched a two-RBI double to the left field wall to swell the Evangels' advantage to 6-0.
  • Mid-America Christian put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when Larman led off with a sharply hit single through the left side before her pinch-runner Karlee Danielson came home two batters later on Humburg's line drive single down the right field line that glanced off the glove of the first baseman, extending the lead to seven.
  • Two batters later, it was Roberts ending the game in a walk-off as Hallie Wilson came into to score from second after the senior first baseman smashed a single up the middle to wrap-up the 8-0 final.
  • The senior tandem of Rachel Humburg and Olivia Roberts led MACU's offensive efforts, as Humburg finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run while Roberts slashed 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs, a run and also drew a walk.
  • Brooklyn Wilson also chimed in with her 11th double of the season, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • In the circle, Rachel Eggleston made history as she tied Katie Long's 2021 record for the most wins for a pitcher in a single season at MACU with her 19th win while also tying Regan Martin's 2019 mark for the most shutouts in a season with her seventh of the year. Overall, Eggleston tossed five clean innings, allowing only five hits with no walks and struck out four.
  • The win marked MACU's first five-inning run-rule victory since defeating Ecclesia (Ark.) 14-2 on Apr. 12 at Allen Field. The victory also solidified no worse than a series split with SAGU.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 9, SW Assemblies of God 1 (5 Inn)
    • Mid-America Christian (31-13, 16-10 SAC)
    • SW Assemblies of God (18-22-1, 11-17 SAC)
PITCHING DECISION TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels scored their nine runs on 11 hits and committed one error while the Lady Lions scored their lone run on seven hits.
  • Mid-America Christian blew the game wide open right out of the gate with a five-run first inning. After Cailey Parsells and Janessa Larman reached on a pair of singles while each nabbed a bag to put a pair in scoring position, Olivia Roberts smashed a single to left to place Parsells to make it a 1-0 game. The Evangels loaded the bases when Rachel Humburg was struck by a pitch before Adyson Bradley continued to stay hot from the plate by slapping an RBI single to left to stretch the lead to 2-0.
  • Hannah Robbins ended the big inning for MACU by smashing a double to left field to the wall, just barely out of the reach of the left fielder to clear the bases before getting thrown out at third, swelling the advantage to 5-0.
  • The Evangels brought the eight-run rule into effect in the bottom of the second. After a pair of singles by Parsells and Kenzee Danielson put runners at second and third with one out, Larman brought both home by smashing a two-RBI single down the left field line before coming across to score when Roberts blasted a double to the left-center field gap to make it an 8-0 ballgame.
  • SAGU's first major scoring threat of the game came in the top of the third as the Lady Lions put three straight runners aboard after two quick outs on a pair of singles and an error. However, MACU starter Harley Beesley was able to get out of the jam by getting Brooke Kinnibrugh to ground into a fielder's choice out at second to come out unscathed.
  • The Evangels added what would be a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the third. After Bradley reached on a bloop single down the right field line, her pinch-runner Cierra Russell came across to score later in the inning with two outs when Parsells dropped a leg-out double into the left-center field gap to set the score to 9-0.
  • After getting two quick outs in the top of the fourth, SAGU was able to replicate the top of the third by getting three straight singles off of Beesley as Myranda Lewis' base-knock through the left side off the end of Larman's glove scored Makinsey Kneip from second before the Lady Lions loaded the bases with a walk during Abigail Howell's at-bat. However, Beesley was able to limit the damage to just one run as Makinsey Exley hit a chopper to Larman at third, stepping on the bag for the fielder's choice groundout.
  • The Lady Lions mustered one more major scoring threat when relief pitcher Christina Moncivais led off the inning with a walk and Hannah Kleinpeter bashed a double to the left-center field gap to put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. However, MACU reliever Allie Doncarlos danced out of the jam by getting Annie Flory to pop out to second, Camille Bradley to line out sharply to shallow left before Makinsey Kneip flied out to center to end the game at 9-1.
  • With her bases-clearing double in the first, senior catcher Hannah Robbins finished with a team-leading three RBIs after finishing 1-for-2 from the plate.
  • Cailey Parsells also turned in a phenomenal day at the plate in her final home game in her MACU career, tallying a team-best 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs to go with a stolen base. With those pair of runs, Parsells became MACU's all-time runs leader with 136, surpassing Jackie Hilterbran (2012-15) with 134 in the books.
  • Olivia Roberts also found herself at the top of another record book in her 2-for-2 day at the plate. With her 40th career double in the bottom of the second, Roberts also surpassed Hilberbran's previous mark of 39 two-baggers. Roberts finished the contest with a pair of RBIs and a run.
  • Janessa Larman also turned in a solid day in her final home game, slashing 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of runs. Larman also made her ascent up the MACU record books with her pair driven in, as her 83 career RBIs also puts her into a tie with Hilterbran for the fourth-most, sitting just one back of Hanna Harris (2017-19) for third.
  • One of four MACU seniors to tally a pair of hits, Adyson Bradley finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Earning her first career win in the circle, Harley Beesley went four innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits with two walks to go with three strikeouts while also making some strong defensive plays to finish with three assists on comebackers to the circle.
  • After scoring just five runs on seven hits in Friday's doubleheader, the Evangels' bats were busy on Saturday as MACU scored 17 runs on 21 hits.
  • For the third straight year, MACU won the regular season series by taking three out of four while improving to 33-11 in the all-time series. The victory also allowed the Evangels to finish the regular season with a 16-8 record at Allen Field.
