OKLAHOMA CITY – With the MACU Women's Soccer team capturing a share of its first Sooner Athletic Conference, the Evangels had six top-level players earn All-SAC honors on Wednesday as senior defender Asley Baker was named the league's Newcomer of the Year.
Joining her sister on the First Team was her sister sophomore forward Brae Baker, senior midfielder Francesca Martella and junior defender Cammy Hargrove. Senior defender Dani Duke and graduate student goalkeeper Rachel Torres were both tabbed to the Second Team.
In her lone season with the Evangels, Asley Baker made a massive impact on both the offensive and defensive ends in the left-back position. Not only has the El Reno, Oklahoma native reached double-digit points from the back on three goals and four assists, but she's also logged the second-most non-goalkeeper minutes (1599) on the squad while being a pair to of a strong defense that allows only 0.95 goals on 10.2 shots per game.
While her sister made a massive impact on the defensive end, Brae Baker's impact on the offensive end was just as crucial. The fellow NCAA D-II Oklahoma Baptist transfer has broken into MACU's single season offensive lists as her 14 goals, seven assists and 35 points all sit in a tie for ninth on each of MACU's goals, assists and points lists.
In her final season patrolling the MACU midfield, Martella has been one of the biggest facilitators for MACU's offensive attack as her eight assists are tied for the sixth-most in a single season at MACU, needing only two more to climb into second on the list. The Bergamo, Italy native finished SAC Tournament play with 10 points, one of seven Evangels to reach double-digit scoring on the season. It is the third time in her three-year Evangels career that Martella has garnered All-SAC honors and the first time getting First Team acclaim after being named to the Second Team in her previous two campaigns.
Another three-time All-SAC honoree, Hargrove was once again selected to the First Team out of MACU's center-back position. Being a key part of a defense that allowed only 4.6 shots on-goal per game, the Oklahoma City product has been selected to the First Team in all three years she's been on the Evangels squad. Hargrove is only the second Evangel to earn All-SAC First Team honors her first three years, joining Julia Nimal, who was a First Team selection every year from 2011-14.
Being named an All-SAC selection for the second-straight year, Torres collected Second Team honors this year after concluding SAC tourney play with a 14-3-2 record in-goal and has posted a 0.88 goals allowed average, made 69 saves on an .812 save percentage and pitched eight shutouts. Her 14 wins is tied for the third-most, eight shutouts is the fourth-most while also breaking into the single season top five with her goals allowed average also sitting at the third-best and her save percentage at the fifth-best.
The goalie from LaPorte, Texas has also solidly solidified herself in MACU's career goalkeeper lists as her 0.94 goals allowed average is by far the lowest, 28 wins marks the second-most, 13 shutouts is the third-most, .778 save percentage is the fourth-highest and needs to make only four more saves in the postseason to crack into the career top five.
Rounding out the All-SAC honorees, Duke earned her first all-conference honor while playing in the center-back position for MACU. The Yukon, Oklahoma native has been the most consistent presence in MACU's backfield this season as she owns the team-lead in non-goalkeeper minutes (1600) while appearing in and starting all 19 games for the Evangels. Duke has been a consistent presence for MACU in her four years with the program, appearing in 69 games and logging 4489 minutes.
