OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to stun the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Jack Allen Field. The Coyotes blanked the Lady Evangels 4-0 in the opener.
The Lady Evangels led 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh of the nightcap when the Coyotes struck for the go-ahead four tallies.
A wild pitch plated the first run to make it a one-run game, but the Lady Evangels were still just one out away from their first win of the season when an outfield error led to the two go-ahead runs.
An RBI double by Shelby Hubbard then made it a 6-4 lead for the Coyotes.
The Lady Evangels refused to go away quietly as a lead-off double by
Ashley Newman got a rally started and Newman scored on an illegal pitch to cut the deficit to one run. MACU would then load the bases with only one out, but consecutive strikeouts ended the threat.
The final three innings featured a matchup of the game one starters,
Amber Tinney for the Lady Evangels and KWU's Chelsea Reid. Both were effective, giving up only one earned run over their three innings of work.
Reid was too much for the Lady Evangels in the first game, pitching a six-hit shutout with three strikeouts over seven innings.
RBI singles by Cailtlin Girard and Katrina Murphy accounted for the Coyotes' runs in the first inning and KWU added two more tallies in the third.
MACU will stay at home and host Sterling College (Kan.) on Thursday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
