Lady Evangels pick up first wins of 2012 with sweep of Sterling College

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels notched their first two wins of the 2012 campaign with a sweep of the Sterling (Kan.) College Warriors Thursday afternoon (Feb. 23) at Jack Allen Field.  The Lady Evangels bested the Warriors 6-1 in the opener and then 10-4 in the second game.

The Lady Evangels (2-4) got on the board in the first inning of the opener and maintained the edge until the top of the fifth when the Warriors evened the score on an RBI bunt single by Samantha Brouwer.

A bases-loaded walk to Tiffanie Sanchez and a run-scoring groundout by Christian Reyes in the bottom of the inning put the Lady Evangels back on top 3-1.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Evangels broke the game open by taking advantage of three errors to score three times and go in front 6-1.   Ashley Newman led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Brittany Prandy's RBI bunt single.  Prandy then advanced to third on two errors and stole home for the second run of the inning.

Kayla Yager then bunted in Jackie Hilterbran for the Lady Evangels' sixth run of the game.

Amber Tinney pitched seven effective innings, allowing only one run and striking out five to pick up the win.

In the nightcap, Newman again got the Lady Evangels off on the right foot by doubling in the first inning and scoring the game's first run on an RBI single by Ashtin Simeroth.

It stayed 1-0 until the Warriors broke through with three runs in the fourth, powered by a two-run homer by Jessica Steere.

The Lady Evangels then answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning that featured an RBI single by Harley Harp.

After the Warriors (0-2) scored a run to tie score in the fifth, the Lady Evangels exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, sparked by RBI doubles by Sanchez and Ashlee Dodson and another RBI single from Harp.

From there, Tinney came on in relief and closed the door with two scoreless frames and four strikeouts.

Hilterbran started on the mound for MACU, going four innings and allowing three runs with two strikeouts.

Newman paced the Lady Evangels' offensive attack with a 3-of-4 effort at the plate.  Harp went 2-of-3 with three RBI, while Dodson, Prandy and Simeroth also collected two hits.

The Lady Evangels will next begin conference play against preseason No. 3-ranked Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m.
