OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels' offense broke out in a big way to lead MACU to its first Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season, 13-7 over the Oklahoma Baptist University Lady Bison in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon (Mar. 1) at Jack Allen Field. OBU took the opener, 12-3.
The Lady Evangels did not pick up their first conference victory last season until the season finale at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Two six-run innings were the difference in the Lady Evangels' victory in the nightcap.
After OBU went up 2-1 in the third on Allison Tunnell's second RBI single of the game,
Ashley Newman sparked a six-run third with a grand slam that suddenly gave the Lady Evangels a 5-2 lead.
OBU wouldn't go quietly though as the Lady Bison chipped away at the lead with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings before benefiting from a pair of errors in the sixth to score two runs and come within 7-6.
But the Lady Evangels put the game away by taking advantage of two errors themselves with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The inning featured RBI doubles by Dodson and Prandy, along with a run-scoring single by Simeroth.
Amber Tinney battled through seven innings to pick up her second win of the season. She allowed seven runs, but only five earned with one strikeout.
Newman drove in four runs on the grand slam, while Dodson was 3-of-4 with three RBI.
In the opener, the Lady Bison (9-4, 1-3 SAC) jumped on top with an RBI single by Ashley Clifton in the first and then went up two runs on a solo homer from Tunnell in the third.
OBU then pulled away with four runs in the fourth before the Lady Evangels got on the board with two in the bottom of the frame that included an RBI single by
Jackie Hilterbran.
Following a pair of OBU tallies in the fifth,
Harley Harp singled home Prandy in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-3.
But a solo blast from Krystal Johnson keyed a four-run seventh inning to help the Lady Bison put it away.
Harp was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate for the Lady Evangels (3-7, 1-3 SAC) in the first game with one RBI, with Newman going 2-of-4.
Clifton, Johnson and Audrey Branscum each had three hits to pace the Lady Bison's offensive attack.
Cassidi Henderson went the full seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four to get the win for OBU.
The Lady Evangels will next host Northwestern Oklahoma State next Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 6) beginning at 1 p.m.
