Chickasha, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels held late leads in both games of a doubleheader at USAO, but each time the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers rallied to sweep the Sooner Athletic Conference twinbill Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 27) in Chickasha, Okla. The Drovers took the opener 3-1 and the second game 4-3 in eight innings.
The opening game was a pitcher's duel, as MACU starter
Amber Tinney and USAO's Neesha Sorrell each tossed a shutout over the first five innings.
It was the Lady Evangels who finally broke through in the top of the sixth as
Christian Reyes led off the inning with an infield single and was driven home on a double by
Ashlee Dodson.
But the Drovers had an answer as the first three batters reached in the bottom of the sixth and a two-run single by Sara Reeves gave USAO a 2-1 lead.
USAO wasn't done as a sacrifice fly by Taylor Smith brought home the third run of the inning.
Autumn Lawrence kept the Lady Evangels alive with a two-out double in the seventh, but a popout ended the threat.
Tinney and Sorrell were each dominant on the mound. Tinney allowed only six hits and three runs in her six innings of work, with half of the hits coming to Ashley Mitchell. Sorrell struck out eight and gave up only four hits in seven innings.
Much like the opener, the Lady Evangels jumped on top with two runs in the top of the fourth in the nightcap, only to have the Drovers take advantage of an error to begin the bottom of the inning to score three runs. Kristen Moyers powered the inning with a two-run double and then scored the third run on a single by Smith.
The Lady Evangels tied the score in the top of the seventh as Dodson led off with a double, stole third and scored on an RBI single by Reyes.
Reyes then stole second and went to third on a groundout, but a double play got the Drovers out of the inning.
The game then went into extra innings and the Drovers plated the game-winning run on a bases-loaded walk to Reeves.
Jackie Hilterbran gave up four runs in her 7 1/3 innings of work, but none earned thanks to the error in the fourth and the international tiebreak in the eighth that automatically places a runner on second base to begin the inning.
Dodson went 3-of-3 with an RBI to lead the Lady Evangels at the plate in the second game.
The Lady Evangels will next host No. 25-ranked Southern Nazarene in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon (Mar. 29) beginning at 2 p.m.
