OKLAHOMA CITY --
Brittany Prandy drove in three runs and
Amber Tinney threw seven solid innings in leading the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels to a 5-3 victory over the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Rangers in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 6) at Jack Allen Field. Kellie Mason stifled the Lady Evangels in the opener with a perfect game as NWOSU won 9-0 via the run rule after five innings.
The win is the second in the Sooner Athletic Conference for the Lady Evangels, already eclipsing their conference win total from last year.
Tinney set the right tone for the Lady Evangels (4-8, 2-4 SAC) by pitching around a bases-loaded, no outs jam by inducing consecutive ground balls to third baseman
Autumn Lawrence and then a lineout to shortstop
Tiffanie Sanchez.
The Lady Evangels' immediately took advantage in the bottom of the inning as
Ashley Newman and
Ashtin Simeroth hit back-to-back singles to start a two-out rally that led to a three-run double by Prandy. Lawrence then doubled home Prandy for the fourth run of the inning.
The inning was kept alive after
Ashlee Dodson struck out swinging with two outs, but reached first on a wild pitch by Mason, who also started the second game for the Lady Rangers.
Tinney made the lead stand by shutting out the Lady Rangers over the next three innings before running into some trouble in the fifth. NWOSU scored three times in the fifth to make it a one-run game, sparked by a two-run single by Alyssa Taylor.
With the tying run at third, Megan Snyder flied out to right and Prandy took the cutoff throw and nailed Monique Zevada at the plate for the third out and preserve the Lady Evangels' lead.
Newman then gave the Lady Evangels some breathing room with an inside the park home run that bounced off the wall in deep right center field with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
Tinney would then close out the victory by retiring the next six hitters she faced, with the last being on a strikeout to end the game. She limited the Lady Rangers to only two earned runs in her seven innings of work.
Prandy was 2-of-3 with three RBI and Newman was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with one run driven in. Lawrence doubled twice in her two at-bats with one RBI.
Cheyanne Terry went 3-of-4 with one RBI for the Lady Rangers (8-5, 1-3 SAC).
After throwing only 50 pitches in her perfect game one win, Mason was rocked for five runs on eight hits in the nightcap.
Mason was simply too much though in the first game, striking out seven in her five perfect innings on the mound.
A wild pitch and a passed ball led to a run in the first and second innings for the Lady Rangers. NWOSU then broke the game open with six runs in the third by taking advantage of three errors.
A two-run single by Autumn Klugh and a run-scoring single by Taylor keyed the inning for NWOSU.
The Lady Evangels will next play five games in two days at the McPherson College Softball Round Robin beginning on Friday morning (Mar. 9) at 8:30 a.m. against Bethany College. The tourney will run through Saturday (Mar. 10).
