Ft. Worth, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels continued building on their best season as an NAIA school by winning their 30th game of the season, an eight-inning 4-2 victory over the Texas Wesleyan University Lady Rams in the opening game of a doubleheader today (Apr. 19) in Ft. Worth, Texas. The Lady Rams battled back to nip the Lady Evangels in the second game 2-1.
In the win, MACU starter Amber Tinney secured her 16th win of the season, also a school record since joining the NAIA.
Tinney pitched all eight innings of the first game, allowing only one earned run with six strikeouts and no walks.
Tied 2-2 heading to the eighth, Taryn Callendar scored the go-ahead run after being placed on second on the international tie breaker. Callendar advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate when Taylor Green reached on an error.
Green was then chased home on an RBI double by Ashley Sanford that gave the Lady Evangels a valuable insurance run.
Tinney then sat the Lady Rams down in order to seal the win.
The Lady Evangels had jumped on top in the second inning with a pair of runs that included an RBI single by Tiffany Holt. The Lady Rams also committed two errors in the inning that led to both runs being unearned.
TWU got on the board on a sacrifice fly by Kali Jester in the fourth and then tied the score with an unearned tally in the fifth.
The Lady Evangels (30-20, 12-14 SAC) also jumped on top in the nightcap as Jackie Hilterbran hit a solo homer in the top of the second inning to make it 1-0.
It remained 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third when Chelsea Anderson hit an RBI single to cap a two-run inning and put the Lady Rams (22-19, 15-13 SAC) in front.
That's all the run support Amanda Windham would need in allowing only the one run on three hits over seven innings.
Kelcie Wolf was also solid on the hill for the Lady Evangels, going six innings and giving up only two runs with five strikeouts.
The Lady Evangels will next play at Southwestern Christian University Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 22) at 2 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
