Lady Evangels Win Game One in Extra Innings; Settle for Split at SAGU

Waxahachie, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels scored two runs in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and win 6-4 in the opening game of a doubleheader today (Apr. 24) at the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions in Waxahachie, Texas.   The Lady Lions then took the nightcap 5-2.

Taryn Callender started the eighth inning on second base as the tiebreaker runner and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Mykah Smith.  Hannah Lynch led off the frame with a walk and eventually plated an insurance run on a passed ball.

Kelcie Wolf then retired the Lady Lions in order to finish off the win.  Wolf went the full eight innings and allowed four runs and struck out four.

The Lady Evangels had fallen behind 2-0 after two innings before erupting for four runs in the third, keyed by a two-run single by Callender and an infied run-scoring single from Lynch. MACU also benefited from three Lady Lion miscues in the inning.

Kelsey Coburn helped the Lady Lions pull even by doubling home a run in the bottom of the third and then hitting a solo homer in the fifth.

Callender sparked the Lady Evangels with two hits in her four at-bats and one RBI.

The Lady Evangels (23-17, 11-13 SAC) started the nightcap with a run in the first and second inning, but a two-run double by Katelyn Veteto capped a three-run third inning for SAGU (6-31) that put the Lady Lions on top.

A bunt RBI single by Veteto in the fifth and an RBI single by Britney Johnson in the sixth gave the Lady Lions a pair of insurance runs.

Callender had another big day at the plate in the second game, going a perfect 4-of-4 for the Lady Evangels.

Johnson was also 4-of-4 to pace the Lady Lions' offensive attack.

Hannah Lee was solid on the hill for SAGU, giving up only one earned run in her seven innings of work.

The Lady Evangels will next play at Texas Wesleyan University tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 25) to close out the regular season.
