Women’s Soccer Looking to Bounce Back Against Texas Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team will be looking to get back on the winning track heading into the second half of Sooner Athletic Conference play as the Evangels will host Texas Wesleyan for a 5 p.m. kickoff at the Mike & Helen Dill Soccer Field on Saturday.

    • Jennifer Starwalt – SR – GK
      • 6-4 Record, 1.79 GAA, 41 Saves, .707 SV%, 3 SHO
  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian is coming off a tough home loss to Science & Arts last Saturday as the Evangels fell 3-0 to the Drovers. MACU was able to keep it to within one goal for most of the match before USAO scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to pull away late.
    • Despite suffering the loss, the Evangels were able to keep one of the most potent offensives in the NAIA in-check. Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt made a season-high nine saves. It was the most saves she recorded in a match since pitching 11 stops in a 2-0 loss to Ottawa (Ariz.) at the NCCAA National Championships on Dec. 4, 2019.
    • The Evangels will be looking to get back on-track on the offensive end as MACU was shutout for the first time since suffering a 3-0 defeat to No. 14 John Brown (Ark.) back on Mar. 20.
    • Mid-America Christian enters the midway point of SAC play with a 3-1 conference mark to sit in third in the league standings with nine points. The Evangels are currently two points ahead of Wayland Baptist (Texas) with seven on a 2-1-1 SAC record.
SCOUTING REPORT
Texas Wesleyan
  • Record: 5-3-2 (0-2-1 SAC)
  • Last Match: Lost vs. No. 7 John Brown (Ark.) – 3-1 – Oct. 9, 2021 – Fort Worth, Texas
  • Series vs. MACU: Series Tied 5-5
  • Last Match vs. MACU: MACU won 2-1 – Feb. 27, 2021 – Fort Worth, Texas
  • Stat Leaders:
    • Savanna Barron – SR – F
      • 9 Goals, 4 Assists, 22 Points, 36 Shots, 17 SOG, 1 GWG
    • Cara Zwilling – JR – F
      • 7 Goals, 14 Points, 34 Shots, 17 SOG
    • Kirkland Redic – FR – F
      • 2 Goals, 4 Assists, 8 Points, 4 Shots, 2 SOG, 1 GWG
    • Julia Villalobos – SR – GK
      • 1-3-1 Record, 2.54 GAA, 42 Saves, .778 SV%
  • Team Notes:
    • Texas Wesleyan put up a pretty good fight against No. 7 John Brown last Saturday as the Lady Rams fell 3-1 in Fort Worth last Saturday. Savanna Barron netted her ninth goal of the season to cut it to a one-goal deficit in the 62nd minute before the Golden Eagles scored an insurance goal just minutes later.
    • TWU is one of the top goal-scoring teams in the NAIA. With the Lady Rams averaging 4.2 goals per game, they rank 12th in the nation in scoring average while also sitting atop of the SAC in the scoring category. However, the Lady Rams are also struggling to replicate the same scoring success in league play, as TWU has netted just three goals in three SAC matches thus far.
    • While TWU has been a strong scoring team, they've struggled in the defense as the 2.11 goals allowed average ranks in the bottom half of the NAIA at 139th of 211 teams.
    • Even though the series is dead even at 5-5 since the two teams started playing each other in 2007, Mid-America Christian has had the upper hand in the last two meetings. MACU topped TWU by a score of 2-1 in Fort Worth, Texas on Feb. 27. The last time the two teams met at the Mike & Helen Dill Soccer Field, the Evangels won a 1-0 thriller on Paola Camacho's golden goal header in the 104th minute on Nov. 2, 2019.
