OKLAHOMA CITY – The Sooner Athletic Conference closed out its 2020-21 Scholar-Athlete awards with softball on Friday as Mid-America Christian recorded a conference-leading 11 recipients.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average while appearing on the eligibility certificate for an NAIA-recognized sport. The student-athlete must also be at minimum a junior by academic standing and have completed two full years at the nominating institution or one full year as a collegiate transfer.
Of the three student-athletes in the conference to maintain a 4.0 cumulative GPA, MACU had two of them as Brookelyn Gilmore and Regan Martin ended the year with an unblemished academic record.
Overall, Mid-America Christian wrapped up the 2021 season as not only one of its strongest academically, but also put together its best season on the field, ending the campaign as the NCCAA National Champions with a 37-14 overall record and a 21-9 mark in SAC play.
On-top of graduating from MACU with a 4.0 GPA, Martin wrapped up her collegiate softball career as the most decorated athlete in the history of the program, earning her third NCCAA All-America honor after finishing the season with a career-record low 1.97 ERA. In her final outing with the Evangels, Martin propelled MACU to the NCCAA Championship game after tossing a one-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory over Carolina in the NCCAA Softball World Series Semifinal.
