Softball Set to Face SAGU in Home-Opening Four-Game Series

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU softball team is ready to open Sooner Athletic Conference play as the Evangels will battle Southwestern Assemblies of God in its home-opening four-game series at Allen Field on Friday and Saturday. The Evangels will open the slate with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Friday before closing out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch.

  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian got back on the winning track in a midweek road doubleheader at Southwestern on Tuesday as the Evangels cruised to a 11-0 and 9-1 victories over the Moundbuilders at the Broadway Sports Complex.
    • One of the biggest factors in the victory was the improved play of MACU's pitching staff as the Evangels allowed only one unearned run over 12 innings of work, giving up only four hits and one walk while striking out 15 batters.
    • Rachel Eggleston picked up her second win of the season in game one after tossing four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and struck out a season-best seven batters. In game two, Chana Wolfe earned her first career MACU win after throwing five innings, giving up just one unearned run on two hits and two walks while tying a career-best four strikeouts.
    • Redshirt sophomore first baseman Makenzie Thurman had a breakout day for the Evangels as she finished the doubleheader batting 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and drew a walk.

    • Southwestern Assemblies of God is coming off a doubleheader split at Texas College on Tuesday. After picking up a 2-0 win in the opening game, the Lions fell 7-3 in game two.
    • SAGU has struggled with the bat to start the 2024 campaign, averaging just 2.5 runs per game on a SAC worst .236 batting average as well as a league-low in slugging percentage at .286. The Lions rank sixth in the league in team ERA at 4.28.
    • From the place, the two most productive hitters have been sophomore catcher Cadence Hopgood and sophomore infielder and pitcher Trista Ford as Hopgood is batting .389 with three RBIs and two runs while Ford is tallying a .385 with two RBIs and three runs.
    • From the circle, the Lions have gotten strong play from junior Natalie Zamora, who is 3-1 in four starts with a 1.67 ERA while Ford has posted a 2.56 ERA.
    • Last season, Mid-America Christian and SAGU faced off against each other six times between the four-game regular season series and two games in the SAC Tournament. The Evangels won the season series 3-1 and defeated the Lions in the opening game of the SAC Tournament 4-3 on a walk-off RBI single by Macy Stockton, but fell in the elimination game 3-2 after Trista Ford hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the sixth.
