Softball Steadies for another Top Tier Twin Bill against No. 9 Our Lady of the Lake

OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off a historic doubleheader sweep over No. 5 Oklahoma City at Allen Field on Saturday, the Evangels are preparing for another enormous non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday as MACU hosts last year's NAIA National Champion No. 9 Our Lady of the Lake for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

  • Team Notes:
    • After dropping the first two games of the series to No. 5 Oklahoma City last Thursday, Mid-America Christian came out on Saturday and put together two performances of the ages in the circle as the Evangels swept both games of the doubleheader by scores of 7-3 and 3-1 over the Stars.
    • They were crucial results for the Evangels as not only did it allow MACU to climb back to above .500 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, but the wins were also the program's first ever non-forfeited regular season victories over the NAIA national powerhouse Stars program.
    • Despite seeing her 22-inning scoreless streak snapped, the Evangels got two strong performances from their ace in the circle, Chana Wolfe. In her pair of pitching performances, Wolfe held a Stars team that ranked in the top five of the NAIA in runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage to just four runs (2.00 ERA) on 10 hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts over 14 innings of work. In the 3-1 win over OCU on Saturday, Wolfe held the Stars to a season-low in runs (1), hits (4) and extra-base hits (1) as well as tallied eight strikeouts in the victory.
    • One of the big reasons for MACU's offensive success against one of the best pitching teams in the SAC was the play of senior utility Emylee Campbell. In the four-game set, Campbell slashed .364 (4-for-11) with a double and a triple for six RBIs and scored a run. Meanwhile Kisbel Vizcaya and Stormy Haynes continued to be on-base machines for MACU at the top of the order as the pair combined to reach base 13 times and scored six runs in the series.

  • Team Notes:
    • Heading into its doubleheader series at No. 3 Science & Arts on Tuesday, Our Lady of the Lake has won 16 of its last 17 games dating back to a doubleheader sweep over the University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Feb. 24. The only loss for the Saints during that stretch was a 5-0 defeat against Friends in the Branson Bash on Mar. 8.
    • Currently, OLLU is one of the best power hitting teams in the NAIA, posting the sixth-highest slugging percentage in the nation at .558 as well as the 11th-best on-base percentage (.440) and 18th-best batting average (.361). The Saints are also stellar in the circle, holding the 16th-best ERA in the NAIA at 2.07 with the eighth-lowest WHIP (1.03).
    • Our Lady of the Lake features a big time balanced lineup that features five of its regular starters hitting .340 or better, headlined by catcher Grace Ross. This season, Ross is slashing an incredible .495 batting average with massive power numbers, hitting 18 extra base hits for 33 RBIs and scored 23 runs.
    • The Saints feature a pair of outstanding arms in the circle in junior Annika Litteria and Ava Hernandez, with both pitchers holding a sub 2.00 ERA while striking out batters in mass volume, combining for 158 strikeouts in 173.1 innings of work.
    • Mid-America Christian is looking for its first win ever against one of the best softball programs in the country. The Evangels are 0-4 against the Saints, but have put up some tough battles over the five years as the Evangels have never lost by more than four runs to OLLU.
