Softball Opens NCCAA World Series Play against Geneva on Monday

OKLAHOMA CITY – For the fourth time in five years, the MACU Softball team will be competing in the NCCAA Softball World Series with this year's championships being played at the Oak Grove Softball Complex in Grapevine, Texas from May 19-21.

The third-seeded Evangels will open tourney play against No. 6 seed Geneva (Pa.) with first pitch slated for 3:30 pm on Field 3 on Monday. If MACU wins, it will play the winner of No. 2 seed Sterling (Kan.) and No. 7 seed Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. If the Evangels lose, they will play the loser of No. 1 seed Jessup (Calif.) and No. 8 seed Dallas Christian at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian is coming off a 2-2 showing at the NCCAA Central Region Championships last week, picking up a pair of 4-2 and 3-2 wins over Southwestern Christian, but came up just short against Sterling as the Evangels fell in both matchups against the Warriors by scores of 3-1 and 6-4.
    • The Evangels got some strong pitching performances from Gia Reynosa and Brooke Wyatt in the Central Region Tournament. In two starts, Reynosa posted a 1-0 record with a save over 11 innings of work, posting a 1.27 ERA while allowing only three runs, two earned on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Meanwhile, Wyatt tossed relief appearances in all four games and went 1-0 while allowing a 0.91 ERA, giving up just one earned run on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings pitched.
    • MACU will be looking to try to get the bats going as the Evangels were only able to hit for a .230 batting average last week in Sterling. Serena Rodriguez and Hallie Wilson led MACU's hitting efforts as Rodriguez slashed 3-for-8 (.375) with an RBI and two runs to go with a pair of walk and a hit-by-pitch for an .545 on-base percentage. Meanwhile, Wilson finished the slate batting .364 (4-of-11) with two RBIs and three runs to go with three walks for a .500 on-base clip to go with a team-high five stolen bases.
  • Mid-America Christian will be seeking to continue its postseason success at the NCCAA Softball World Series. Making its fourth trip in the last five years, the Evangels have advanced to the semifinal round in each of the last three trips, which included winning the NCCAA National Championship on May 20, 2021 with a 3-2 walk-off-win over Concordia-Ann Arbor (Mich.) in eight innings.

    • Competing in the NCAA D-III Presidents' Athletic Conference, Geneva wrapped up its conference tournament play with a 30-13 overall record after dropping a 10-9 defeat to Grove City in the semifinal game.
    • The Golden Tornadoes are a strong hitting team that over the course of the season is boasting a .339 team batting average and are one of the best power hitting teams at the NCAA D-III level, posting the 28th-highest clip at .493. GC is also a strong pitching team, posting a strong 2.82 team ERA.
    • Molly Shelley and Lexi Zanic have been leading the batting efforts for the Golden Tornadoes with both hitting well above .400 while both players hit for some power and have some speed on the basepaths. Julia Hart has been the team's most prolific power hitter and run producer, notching a .713 slugging percentage with a team-high 49 RBIs due in-large part to 13 doubles and 11 homers.
    • The Golden Tornadoes also feature two strong arms in the circle in McKenzie Rapp and Sophia Tvaroch, who both own a sub-3.00 ERA while both pitchers are nearly striking out twice as many batters than they are walking.
    • The matchup between MACU and Geneva marks the first ever meeting between the two programs.
